My favorite genre is country/western. I have lived in Texas all my life and this may have been a factor in this (as I look in my iPhone, I have 420 songs and 387 are country). I enjoy the occasional pop/rock/rap/alternative song but I always come back to country. My college friends who know I am gay laugh at the fact that I love country music and am gay (though I don't find them mutually exclusive).

Side-note: Since most of the country artists I listen to are men and write songs about women, I usually always change the sex of the person in my mind and play it out as a gay version mentally. I don't know if I'm the only one who does this.

Unfortunately, I haven't found other gay people who like the genre and feel left out when everyone rages on the latest single from [insert pop artist name here]. I know y'all are out there!

Anyways, here are some of my top country artists:

    Alan Jackson
    Brad Paisley
    Casey Donahew Band
    Dierks Bentley
    Eric Church
    George Strait
Jason Aldean (except his country/rap songs)
    George Strait
    Josh Abbott Band
    Josh Turner
    Luke Bryan
    Old Crow Medicine Show
    Randy Rogers Band
    Turnpike Troubadours
    ...

My top songs at this time are

My dad is a huge country fan, so I grew up on actual country. I am not a fan of the "gotta gettt on my track-terrr, and have some fun with my woh-man...." It's just not my thing.

But the good stuff? I really love it. I just saw Willie Nelson in concert last week...it was great. He has great songs. KD Lang's "Reintarnation" was a huge part of my life when I was younger... I just loved it!

No, I don't, as I usually associate it with rednecks who hate us.

I think there's only a half-truth in that. Otherwise it's a very large generalisation

Leann Rimes, "The Heart Never Forgets"

    Dolly Parton, "Jolene"

Leann Womack, "I Hope You Dance"

Easton Corbin, "Lovin You Is Fun", "I Can't Love You Back"

Ne-Yo ft. Tim McGraw, "She Is" (Idk if this counts since Tim is featured, but it is a good song regardless)

Katrina Elam, "Would You Love Me Anyways", "Love Is"

Scotty McCreery, "I Love You This Big", "The Trouble With Girls Is"

Rascal Flatts, "Life Is A Highway", "What Hurts The Most"

Tracy Chapman, "Give Me One Reason", "Fast Car", "The Promise", "Baby, Can I Hold You", "Talkin' Bout A Revolution" (Not sure if Tracy counts but I don't think Folk and Country are mutually exclusive, at least I hope not)

I agree. Plus, why should I abstain from enjoying something I like because some people hate us?

I'm not a big country fan, but I do like Darius Rucker a whole heck of a lot. That guy's voice is really special, and in Hootie and the Blowfish? Freakin' awesome.

You seem to live in Georgia now. I guess my question is if you began to like country music while in the Northeast or when you came down South. Plus, I know the Northeast is not a big monolith of liberalism because, at least in New York, upstate tends to be more "conservative" than downstate so maybe certain regions have an affinity for country music. But, what do I know!

When I'm in the mood for country, I usually pick Dolly Parton.
My fav Dolly tracks would be : Light of a Clear Blue Morning, Harper Valley PTA, I'll Make Your Bed, Love Is Like A Butterfly, Here You Come Again.

I also like some songs by Suzy Bogguss, Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Shania Twain,Trisha Yearwood, and Garth Brooks.

I do think there is some regional basis to liking it. I don't care for it much. The good thing about it is that the lyrics paint realistic pictures about life. I don't care for the twangy-ness of a good deal of it.

Some Brad Paisley is good. He's a good looking guy, too. Corny as it is, the country song I know best would be by Dolly Parton, and it's the only one of hers I like, because I was sitting there at work looking out the window at the blustery day during the holidays as it was playing.

I like Johnny Cash, John Denver, and Willie Nelson. I also really like some southern rock and country rock, if that counts.
