So, more recently it seems like EVERY single time I'm watching TV or a movie with my family there's always something gay. A gay character, a gay scene, something about gay people, or a gay joke or something. And, it's always so awkward as heck.

I'm not out to my dad, so that makes it especially awkward. At one point he said "Just fast-forward through this, I don't want to see the gay guy." He's very homophobic, I think maybe even more than my mother.

Last time we were watching TV a character came out, and his mom kept showing him pictures of hot guys in magazines, and I was biting my tongue the entire time, it was so awkward. :icon_redf:eusa_doh:

I was watching TV one time with my mom and the kindle commercial with the gay couple came on. She started going on a rant about it. Then on Teen Wolf on MTV. My parents watch the show and say they're going to stop watching it because of it even though they watched the last few season.

I swear I remember when I was really young and not even at the stage of questioning my sexuality, my dad was talking about how he had to leave the room when two characters were having anal sex (obviously not graphically because this was in the nineties, but you know...)

But I don't think he's homophobic, he doesn't actually object to gay characters (like he watches Glee/Smash with me and my mother).

I don't find gay scenes that awkward unless a huge deal is made out of them. Like if it's a coming out story then yes I usually tense up a bit, but if it's just a scene with a gay character in then I won't bat an eyelid. Now sex scenes, that's where the awkwardness arises...

My family seem homophobic too when watching tv. I remember there was this part on a show where two guys kissed and my sister and mom were all like "ew, let's fast forward and get this over with". So yeah, I'm in the same boat as most of you guys x.x

Sounds like that Catherine Tate sketch with the gay Irish kid!

I also find it extremely awkward if there is any reference to homosexuality when my parents are in the room. Even if there is a slightly effeminate guy on TV but there is no mention of him being gay then my mum will not stop going on about 'Is he? isn't he?' and it's so irritating! At least she's not making explicitly homophobic comments, but I always feel like I should keep quiet, and anything I say may be analysed. I am not ready to come out to my parents and don't want to give myself away!

One question: since when do parents watch Teen Wolf? lol

Danny is awesome and so is Ethan (even though his brother's a douche) so they need to eff off. (If you wanna have some fun, point out that last season Danny was openly known to have a crush on Kanima-dude and was openly out even in season 1).

I honestly don't think my parents find it much of a big deal...granted they don't really watch many fun TV shows.

I am in the same situation as you, I am not out to my dad and he is completely homophobic. When ever he sees someone gay on tv he says things like "they are disgusting, they make me sick, they should disappear" All I do is just ignore it, or I tell him to stop being so judgmental... If only he knew his son was gay and that his wife (my mum) and his daughter (my sister) where hiding it from him. To be honest, if he did find out about me I think he would kick me out of the house and disown me. Just try to ignore it man, I know it is hard but we have got to be strong!

I hardly watch anything around my mom anymore, ever since I got a TV put in my room, I rarely ever am in the room when she watches TV. The few times I did watch with her in the room, it did get really super awkward.

I grew up in the 90s, back when gay scenes on TV were extremely rare. I'll tell you though, the few scenes I did see on TV majorly shaped my whole idea of what it meant to be gay. I grew up in a single-parent household and my mom worked a lot, so TV--Full House, Family Matters, saved by the Bell--practically raised me. No gay stuff in those shows, though!

I used to watch 90210 (the original) and Melrose Place every week with my mom. I think the first time I ever saw two guys kiss was on Melrose place. I remember that it made me lose my breath--it was one of the most fascinating, exhilarating things I had ever seen up to that point. I don't think my mom noticed me gawking.

haha... I was in watching The Fosters (first or second episode) when my mother walked into the room and sat down. I don't know but I was afraid to just change it because it would be like I was hiding something so I just continued on like nothing was unusual. Stef kissed Lena on the cheek and all the sudden mom had stuff to do and just started shuffling around awkwardly. I laughed at her and left it on.

I was watching a Lost Girl marathon on syfy and my mother barged in right when they were showing a short, PG, lesbian scene. She freaked out like i was watching porn and demanded to know everything about the show. She calmed down a little after seeing the next scene that showed the female character with a male character. It frustrates me the she flips over that but has no problem letting me borrow her True Blood DVD's. They show full on sex in that show but apparently it's okay when it's with a man and a woman.

Its just automatic i cant control it my face gets really hot and i feel like i cant breath i dont even know why i get so nervous. Saying that just reminded me one day i said somthing to my grandma that made her say 'do u even like boys?' And my face went sooo red! And she told me that too and the silly thing is wen i answered 'yes' she seemed to believe me :S

I don't watch TV with my parents much. However from what I have seen my mother doesn't seem to react much, so I don't know. My dad on the other hand. We were watching Game of Thrones, and one time when Two guy characters (Renly and Loras) were kissing....quite heavily and stuff my dad literally groaned and covered his eyes, and I think he said yuk, might've made that up.

I used to watch Game of Thrones with my bro, and he never commented on Renly and Loras, but I was already out to him, and he actually considered those sex scenes less awkward than Cercei and Jamie.

My parents don't give a crap about what I watch.

It's horrendously awkward and it seems now that almost every show on television has a very strong gay presence, which I suppose is a good thing really. My family tend to change the channel whenever gay characters come up on a tv show, they know I'm gay and are fine with it. I think it's just casual homophobia and they don't even realise what they're doing. The most annoying part is that gay characters are still, to a large extent, portrayed as flamboyant, effeminate men and it just reinforces all of the different stereotypes that I try to distance myself from and I often find myself changing the channel when these types of characters pop up because, as a very straight-seeming gay guy, that kind of representation really bothers me.

Ugh, I empathise so much with this. We watch Hollyoaks a lot at my house, and there used to be a teenage lesbian couple on there and my mum used to send me looks whenever they got screen time. She always says things like "eugh" and "it's so unnatural" whenever there are gay kissing scenes etc. so it's just a teensy bit awkward :/

Lol, Hollyoaks has a hell of a lot of gay characters for such a small village, doesn't it? (was rather a fan of Brendan+Ste myself..) .

Not many shows with gay couples get watched in this house, but my dad will always, always comment if someone on a quiz show / chat show is gay. Not that my dad is too knowledgeable about celeb, but ppl like Graham Norton, John Barrowman, Alan Carr etc always get commented on a

Im so used to his reaction now, but its soooo tiring.. :-(

For one things, it seems like every TV shows needs at least one gay character these days. It represents reality, and it doesn't. In some small circles around which a TV show may be based, there may not be any gay friends and it would seem forced.

My pet peeve isn't on TV. It's in the movie theater. Whenever I've been to a movie where there is a plot or a subplot that is gay themed and two known box office actors deep kiss, some of the people in the audience squirm. It's more audible from the ladies in the movie theater. I'm sure some men are also uncomfortable. And this is in recent times and in major cities. Can't these people just shut up and watch the movie?
