Does it annoy anyone else when people say that gay gays are all promiscuous and have a ton of sexual partners? I don't know why, but whenever people use this argument it literally makes me so angry! :bang:
Ha. If someone were to try to say that sort of thing to me, I would point out that straights glorify promiscuity to a tremendous degree, up to the point of promoting heterosexual pedophilia. The evidence for this includes (but is not limited to: A) Ladies nights at bars and clubs - in fact virtually any sort of event that structures itself to attract single women. The goal is to get women there so men can go there and have a better chance of having NSA sex with them. B) the widespread use of sex, and the implication of sex between single people used in advertising of everything from hair products to breath mints. C) entire chains of stores that sell underwear and costumes that let straight couples role play non-committed/NSA sex. Add to this that depictions of this activity are a not uncommon trope in movies and television, often used for laughs, but not always. D) related to (c) above, the oft used trope of depicting women dressed up in a sexually provocative way that is a loose imitation of how underage girls 'traditionally' dress. Pigtails, giant lollipops, school uniforms with ultra short skirts, etc. this is basically promoting sex with underage children (in some cases prepubescent underage children). And you can find it all over the place, from movies to music videos. E) the routine promotion of NSA sex in music F) the routine promotion of NSA sex in publications and the routine display of such publications where children can see them. I'm mainly looking at you Sports Ilustrated, but in many states, it's normal for soft core porn like Playboy and Penthouse to be openly displayed. Not to mention many airport news stands. And so on and so forth. Straights surround themselves with things that glorify sex on a constant basis and virtually none of it (with the exception of Erectile Dysfunction drugs and may KY sex lube) indicates that marriage is involved. A relatively small proportion of it implies that the people depicted might be dating. But the vast majority is NSA fun all the way. Contrasting all this is the vast amount of lip service that straights give to marriage and relationships and monogamy. But the mostly unspoken part seems to be that when 'you' are younger you should go out and have lots of NSA sex, but later you should settle down and get married and be monogamous (but pretending to do NSA stuff with your spouse is ok). There are further complications when you get into issues of what society expects of men vs women and how that has changed/is changing over time, but you probably get the basic idea. Any straight who says gay men are tremendously promiscuous compared to straights (or at least compared to how straight idealize themselves to be) is being a hypocrite. The more so if they are also against marriage equality since in that case they are simultaneously complaining about a behavior and trying to prevent one alternative. Alternatively, you can also just suggest that they're jealous since we get to do what they only fantasize about (having lots of NSA sex). That is an option in the community, although not one that works for everyone of course. But we don't try to pretend it's not there the way straights often do. My 2c worth, Todd
That really does make me completely crazy, and it's even worse for bisexual people because we go both ways. Just because I like both guys and girls does not mean I run around screwing anything that moves.
