you could probably watch where his eyes wonder or just get to know him, theres no clear way to know if someone is gay
Also you could start a conversation about homosexuality in general, to see how he reacts on this subject... At least, if he isn't homophobic, he won't freak out if you try some flirting. Be careful not to out yourself accidentally though...
