So I am planning on having a conversation with a guy I have gotten close with. I don't really expect anything in return but I feel like I need to say something before it gets so uncomfortable that we're not friends anymore. For the record, he does openly identify as gay.

Any tips for how to preserve the friendship after telling or would y'all recommend that I not say anything at all?

Well its up to you what you say, and if...

Well if he is gay and you are you might tell him... maybe in a slow approach, like you really like him...
    and see how he reacts..

and you might tell him to stay friends if you would like that... in case he would not feel the same...
