Taking "in the closet" too literally...

When I was home over spring break my Dad asked to grab the gun he got himself for his birthday to show my sister. My dad is a crazy redneck, homophobe, racist, drunk right... He isn't necessarily mean but just kind of odd... And totally not all the way there. So anyways he has like a super tall closet with two sets of shelves on the top and so I wasn't sure which one it was on... He is probably about three inches shorter than me and the very top shelf is out of my range of sight when just standing normally, so naturally I just step on a stool thinking he put it at the very top (it's a gun and logically that’s where you should put it; out of reach of my nieces) unfortunately my logic was wrong and it was on the floor in the bottom corner. This was unfortunate because on the very top shelf was a stack of gay porn, lube, and a dildo... Just chill'n, not in a box or covered up but just out in the open... I then, not wanting to keep looking, said I couldn't find the gun and he grabbed in from the bottom corner where I hadn't seen it.
I didn't say anything but I totally can't look at him the same and don't know what to say... I couldn't decide if I should laugh or be really sad... This means by dad has been in the closet 58 years... but it also means my dad uses a dildo which is a traumatizing thought lol

I don't really need advise but I thought I'd share and see your thoughts because I don't even really know what mine are...

It's always weird to have information about your parents' sex lives. Just don't focus on it.

I think it's really sad that your dad is so closeted. Is he still with your mother? If so, it might be kind of sad for her, too.

I've heard stories before of people coming out after their kids do. That might happen here.

(Not that I really think this is a good idea, but I just had an image of a guy finding a note in his gay porn saying, "I guess this really is genetic. Love, your son.")

Thanks, I'm not super torn up or anything but it's just kind of puts things into perspective not to mention he has a brother who came out and then was totally cut out of the family... So it makes a little more senee why he hasn't come out, not to mention that homosexuality is often the root cause of homophobia.
The note thing is super funny though :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
And no they have been divorced for 10 years now so my mom would probably just laugh and keep on keep'n on

mmm, kind of a similar situation for me. only my dad was soooo against me coming out. now that I'm older I feel sorry for him. just do right by you and love yourself, maybe he will follow suit, or maybe he never will, you can't change other people, just the way you treat them. <3
