First thoughts about Australia?

Discussion in 'Fun and Games' started by anthonythegamer, Jan 14, 2014.

  1. We've had this type of thread before, except it was about Canada. This one will be about Australia because it's for fun. Plus, like EC Canadians, we have a sizable Australian community here too. So, what do you guys think about when Australia comes to mind (other than Australia, smartass).

Kangaroos, or wallabies, Vegemite, Koalas, tough border security, really cool accents, driving on the left, Sydney (most of my extended family lives there), colorful plastic money, and so much Asian food.

Kangaroos, the outback, steering wheel backwards, Marty and Moog from Mighty Car Mods, ARidersLife, the fact that the upper half is a dog head, the lower is a cat head, and NZ is cat food.

    Tasmania,

Flag that looks almost like New Zealand's

Capital is Canberra not Sydney :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Calendars must be made different than in the north because up in the northern hemisphere, calendars put winter pictures in December, January, etc.

    Newest neighbor is East Timor

Is a haven of biodiversity and endemic species (i.e. Every living thing will kill you :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

Great Barrier Reef, surfing, Carcharodon carcharias

Issues gold coins every year called Australian Nuggets, which oddly, now feature cute pictures of kangaroos instead of famous gold nuggets like in the early days

    Government mint is in Perth.

    Look at me, I'm a continent/country.

While I can come up with a reasonably thorough bullet list, I will instead offer these two:

    - there seems to be an abundance of weird and dangerous animal life, right down to funnel web spiders
    - it takes one seriously long flight without stops to get there

And I do think of both. That's why I've never been there.

Oops, I meant Tasmania. I shouldn't have mixed those up, but it's been so long since geography class...:icon_redf

I wonder who made the Canada thread?

I think about without looking things up:
-Their similar political system to mine in Canada.
    -Neat dry landscape.
-Unique animals like kangaroos and platypus.
    -Sexy Accents.
    -Multiculturalism.
    -Independent character.
-Major cities like; Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Darwin, Perth, and Adelaide.
    -Have states instead of provinces.

I lack total imagination. It took me forever to see that Italy was a boot kicking a rock/ball :icon_redf.

Well I have two very close online friends who live in Australia, so I think my perception has been tainted by them, but I think "Australia" and my first reaction is "everything will kill you!". I mean seriously, how many dangerous/poisonous/venomous animals can you cram into one place? (One of my friends sent me a Christmas card and actually signed it "From the land where everything is out to get you!")

Also, koalas. Koalas and kangaroos. OH, and wombats!

And Australia's timezone is broken. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: They are barely starting their day when I'm going to sleep! And the weather? It's freezing there, and hot here. It's hot there, and freezing here!

I don't like the American anthem because it's not what most national anthems are, where they sing about how great the country is, such as Oh Canada and Advance Australia Fair.

Exotic pants and animals. Emus. Possibly even Emo Emus.

    Former penal colony.

Seems macho in ways, like the wild west, or Texas, but a British-based version.

    Dusty.

Good surfing. No doubt also many cute surfer-boys.

Conservative; worrisome censorship issues. Seems sexually up-tight/repressive.
