Since we've seen our first thoughts about Canada and Australia, what do we think of the United States of America?

    Dominant superpower.
Too much spying and too little diplomacy
Why do you need that big a military?
    Insane gun laws
Massive geographic and racial wealth divide
    Patriotism (however misplaced)
Some élite universities, but a terrible standard of education
The birthplace of jazz, rock, and country (the last one you still have to make amends for)
    American exceptionalism *shudders*
Enormous cities, some beautiful, some not so much
Mutilated English, but not accepting those who don't speak English
    A massive Spanish-speaking population
There needs to be an embargo on US goods in Australia, especially TV

It's got it's fair share of flaws and the political climate is awful, but it's home. And when my ancestors couldn't live freely as Jews where they lived, America offered them that opportunity, so I'm grateful for that.

Come on, Aussie.... I'm sorry, but there is no right or wrong way to speak English. I think Brits and Aussies have a bit of a superiority complex about that.

I'll go for the positives of the US:
    -Diverse landscape and people.
    -TONS of stuff to do.
-Still has great TV and movies.
    -Lots of tech startups.
-Strong democratic foundation... you have to start somewhere and someday maybe it really will be "Government of the people, by the people, for the people.."

Some states are bigger than many countries (ever try driving across Texas :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)
    Most boring looking currency
Our citizens love certain foreign cultures (e.g. Japanese, British)
What manufacturing we do tends to be in higher quality goods
    Most Americans suck at geography.
Western states' laws are based on the Spanish system while Louisiana is based on the Napoleonic Code.
We haven't "officially" been to war since 1945

Well we do have an interesting accent, and the whole "Learn English if you want to live here" thing just doesn't make a ton of sense. Could you imagine what the residents of Quebec would say if the Canadian government said, "If you want to live here, learn English. No more French!!!"

In regards to language, I don't have a problem with that. I prefer most american spellings. I mean, what is the point of so many silent Us anyway? American terminology isn't exactly unheard of here, and it's really just an evolution of language. Neither is wrong or right.

    Home.
    The Constitution.
    Democracy.
    Beautiful national forests and parks.
Much diversity in landscape, population, culture, cuisine.

  14. Excess and misguided pride of the country
    Exorbitant spending on military
Too big of a gap between rich and poor
A high poverty rate for a first-world country
    Greedy politicians
Messy beaches, except for some of the only clean ones
A huge jumble of gun laws
    Beautiful forests and nature
Insane politicians (cough cough, Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz, cough cough)
Land of the free! Wait, really?
Messiest separation of church and government
    Diverse population
    Great entertainment
    Broken education system

    Best:
    - more opportunities to be educated, entrepreneurial, and break out of a caste system
    - diverse in its people and its geography
    - fairly efficient and economically functional
    - freedoms we take for granted that others don't have
    - quality of life is decent

    Worst:
    - the rich are getting rich and the poor are getting poorer
    - many uncouth, narrow minded, toothless hillbillies
    - religious zealots and more rigid religiosity than in other places (sort of goes with hillbillies)
    - losing its grip as a superpower
    - education is sort of free, and sort of cheap (college), but medical care is not
