  1. Same as the English and French threads, how would you rank your Mandarin?

Overall, I'm a 7. I have a moderate accent speaking it, but I'm good at understanding and reading it.

Yeah... this thread won't be as popular because not many people are interested in learning Mandarin compared to Spanish and French.

I did not vote because there was no option for 0. I do not know Mandarin at all.

My high school in NYC offered Mandarin as an Honors course to sophomores only because students must have a high GPA in freshman year to prove that they can handle it. I heard that it's very difficult to understand and learn haha.

Instead, I studied Latin for 4 years because I was good at it and enjoyed it.

I voted 1 because there was no zero.

    I'd rather have a satsuma.

    Happy days

Not at all. And I don't plan to ever learn it. So....

This. There was no "zero," so I didn't vote.

I have no plans to learn languages other than English and the typical Spanish/French which are standards in all high schools ... I think. Languages on that same root system are fine.

So, if German would blow my mind, an Asian language is out of the question. Also, Spanish and French have only helped me in things such as getting a hotel room, ordering a meal, or asking for directions. I have not put them to use in any manner in a work setting, so learning a more difficult language without a payback is highly unlikely at this point.

I could definitely see an interest in Mandarin, Farsi, or Arabic, for example, if it is in one's ancestry or if one needs to master them for their career.

The only Mandarin I'm familiar with are the little oranges one buys, with the leaves and stem still on. Very sweet and juicy, those. And the charts in my acupuncturist's office are in Mandarin, I think, but I can't read a word of them.

As for the language, I fear that it's a hopeless proposition, to learn how to write, recognize and speak such a set of symbols. I had this fantasy that I'd learn Japanese once, and it faded fast. Perhaps if I was younger, or had the money to travel, and immerse myself in a different culture...if only one could not have to work, and just have time to learn things.

Just the tiny bit of inquired about on here and another forum (specifically intended for inquiry into Chinese).

Would love to learn Mandarin one day, though.

Shamefully, my entire family is from Chinese ancestry and I know nothing except "hello," "how are you," "good bye," and "I am a bird".

For some idiotic reason I voted for 2 even though I meant to vote 1.
I don't speak Mandarin at all, although I tried to watch a few podcasts of Beginner's Chinese

I picked 4. I was okay at it when I was taking it consistently, especially considering I was in a severe depression when I was learning it, but it's been several years since I've looked at anything pertaining to the language. I keep thinking of trying to pick it back up, but Chinese can be a bit intimidating when you don't have a structured classroom to keep you at it.

    I know about 400 Japanese Kanji, so I'll probably recognize 1 or 2 words in a text : p
Not going to learn Mandarin until I've learned Japanese, German, French and Spanish..

I would have voted zero if there were the option. (Voted 1)
When I was still in Hingschool we had some exchange students from China in our class, and I was pretty good friends with one, who then tried to teach me the occasional phrase, but all I remember is: "Ni hao, wo hen hao, wo ai ni." (and I don't know how to write it in actual chinese, that's just what it sounded like I guess...) And I'm not sure anyone would be able to understand it hence to pronunciation difficulties

That's literally all the Mandarin I know (other than thank you but I've never seen it spelled), so 0.000000000001?
