On a scale of 0 to 10, how well do you understand/speak Japanese?

I'd say I'm a 5, since I see my Japanese as "half-way there." I read and understand it better than I can speak it (common with self-taught Japanese speakers, apparently), but my fluency isn't terrible and my Japanese accent is a bit above moderate.

What happened to the poll? Can a moderater delete this, please?

I'd say a one or a two. Outside of anime, I don't really have any reason to learn Japanese, so I never really pursued it.

I said a 3. I know some basic things, from Anime, but I've also picked up some due to studying the Sengoku and Imperial Japanese eras.

I couldn't sanely formulate a Japanese sentence. I'll leave it at that.

  8. I said a 3 because even though I got an A in Japanese one in my online school for 10th grade, I forgot a ton of the things I learned, so I'm taking a lot of points off for forgetting. I am going to start re-learning again, but I have been so busy with school this year that I've been having to put it off a lot. Other than forgetting, I would say I'm about a 5 myself, I'm better at reading it than anything and writing comes a close second. Speaking and hearing are a bit hard for me, but I can still managed to sing some songs in Japanese. It's sure is a lot easier than trying to sing K-pop songs lol.

I can form a sentence in Japanese, a good bit of them still by memory. I could form a lot more sentences though if only I wouldn't have forgot so much of what I learned in Japanese 1 in 10th grade! ><

Writing is honestly 1. I can write some sentences with Kanji, but this is from my muscle memory. The only rōmaji I know is from jokes/anime, and I try not to use it because a book I read says it isn't right. My Japanese video games almost never use it. Actually, I've seen it used much more in European releases of video games that were originally released in Japan!

Listening/speaking is 4. These are the things I find easiest to learn in languages. I can watch RAW anime and understand most of it. I usually watch anime with English subtitles. I can hold a basic conversation in Japanese.

Reading is 2. I import Japanese video games and play some of them online. In a frantic 2 vs 2 battle with giant fighting robots, it's important to work well with your teammate. It's easier to remember some Kanji symbols when it's the difference between winning and losing. And it is helpful to learn a little to get through single player games such as some of the Super Robot Wars series.

I'm gonna say 3 overall though because I want to be positive and I expect to improve with time. I've read some lessons online... and I'm not gonna lie... I probably wouldn't bother learning anything about the Japanese language if I didn't play these games. Although now I think I might eventually be able to fully appreciate my Japanese manga and other books. I cannot read most of the content in my Japanese strategy guides... although those data tables are sweet and you can learn the 'language' of fighting game inputs within seconds.

I'm a five. I can speak it fairly well. And I know all the hiragana and katakana characters. I'm also writing a manga in Japanese. ^.^

About a one. I can get a word or expression here or there, and maybe catch the "-masu" ending of a verb XD.

It used to be at a 4 or 5, but I haven't done anything with it for a year. I plan on going back to it eventually. Right now, about a 1 or 2. I can still read hiragana and recognize the general meaning of the more common kanji. I half remember the katakana.

    Super Robot Wars is awesome.

Anyways, I'd say I'm 3. I don't know a lot of words, and I know some of the hiragana and katakana characters, but I can (and do) sing along to a lot of Japanese songs (even though I sound like a drowned cat =^o^=).

    Two for me.

I've become good at roughly understanding what Japanese people are talking about, but I couldn't put a sentence together for the life of me, even though I know quite a few words.

Woops, I said 7 but I really meant 5 and didn't catch it until the poll had already processed it... Sorry... :bang:

Anyway, I've been taking Japanese classes at school and my teacher says I'm one of the best kids in class. For some odd reason, I don't know if it's because I tried learning it when I was younger but gave up because Rosetta stone sucks, or something else, but suddenly, I started learning it again, and it just clicked! I had the entirety of the Hiragana alphabet memorized in less than two weeks and Katakana in the same amount of time. I was also the first kid in my class to even dare try experimenting with Kanji. The only real trouble I have is trying to put sentences together and say them aloud. But I have no trouble reading, unless obviously it's a kanji character I don't know, or writing.

I love Japanese because, to me, it's a really fun language.
