There was another thread on this, but it's in the Technology section and quite old, so, I figured it'd be okay to make another one, here.

So, how fast do you type?

Well it says 45. But I find it harder to read the word, then type it down, whereas if it is just coming form my head I can type a lot faster.

Damn, only 38 words per minute. This is weird because my previous job was an encoder in a government office

I got 40 wpm at first but I got competitive with myself so I tried it again and got 61 wpm so now I feel better. Once you get into your own rhythm then it gets easier.

53 with one hand and 85 with two hands.

Very disappointed and almost tempted to have another go.

I honestly expected better, but I think it's easier when you're typing actual sentences rather than just random words. I'm more disappointed that I left one of my typos in there.

Probably will have higher mark on Turkish. English letters are on weird places.

Also agree with Mbanema, writing actual sentences are way much easier.

59 words, with some mistakes, and supposedly better than 80.96% of the users.

But not sure what the "real world" might be like. Most of my typing is stuff I'm writing, and it seems like I type as fast as I need to for my half-baked ideas...

Another issue: the keyboard one uses can make a huge difference. I remember reading a piece on the IBM M series, and the author mentioned his best typing performance came with an IBM M series.

I left more than one...only to discover it appears they can be fixed. I guess I'm still influenced by 9th grade keyboarding (would have been "typing" in an earlier, simpler era, but in the 1980s we had the exciting new world of the computer. Indeed, for part of the class, we used the latest from RadioShack, the new, high power TRS-80 Model 4!). In class, you made a mistake, and it was there for good, no corrections allowed.

At least we live in a world now where mistakes can be fixed, and fixed easily...

In the 1970s, my father had to write a dissertation. According to my mother years later, every page had to be perfect. Mistakes were forbidden. And corrections were not allowed. You made a boo-boo, you didn't reach for the eraser, or the Liquid Paper, or even attack the Eaton Corrasable with a pencil eraser. You removed the page from the typewriter, threw it away, and inserted a new piece of paper.

Most people would write the dissertation, edit it, and then hire a secretary, possibly with a nice, shiny, new IBM Selectric to do the final 3 copies. My father, on the other hand, went out and bought a new Smith-Corona electric typewriter, and did it himself. Even 15 years after the fact, I think my mother questioned his sanity.

While a part of me aspires to Old Fartdom, I do have to admit there are some things about the good old days that I do not miss.
