Maybe it's his squirrelly French-Spanish-Italian-butchered-English accent.  Then again, he WAS less interested in "plundering" than in looking good doing it. And he lived on an island with nothing but other guys. And the few times he came in contact with females, he either got scared or angry, even as the other pirates drooled over them.
