So for a few months now I've been seeing a therapist about my gender. He's not that well informed on trans* issues, but he's been a lot of help. Anyway, at my last session, he said he's going to reefer me to a gender specialist and I can talk to them about this. Does anyone know if they'll be any different than a "regular" therapist?

    Congrats!!

Somone can correct me on this, but I think the difference is that gender specialists have training in trans* issues and are able to give recommendation letters for blockers/HRT?

Basically what Techno Kid said. Gender specialists/therapists specialise in working with trans* patients, and can prescribe (or write a referral) for hormone blockers and/or HRT, unlike your average, regular therapist.

Gender specialists tend to say/do far fewer stupid and/or offensive things, in my experience. They tend to be more educated in general about our issues, pronouns etc.

Ok, I guess that will be better than how it is now.. I've gotta say, I'm kind of excited, because now I feel like I'm actually making progress.
