OK So this is a SERIOUSLY long shot but I will ask anyway. So I'm getting my passport changed to my new name and I hit a snag on the online form because they didn't like the fact that my title (Miss) didn't match my gender. Anyway I rang the passport office and they said to me basically I could change my gender on my passport if I could provide them with a letter from my GP saying that I intend to live as a female permanently. Now I've looked it up and I found this: http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consu...vernment/documents/digitalasset/dg_202401.pdf Which seems to confirm that statement. Basically what I am asking is if anyone has done this or can offer an opinion on this, because obviously I don't want to be had up for fraud or something, but if I can get my passport to say female I can't NOT take that chance...
It's weird, I've checked that .gov site through and through and it just says I need a letter from my GP saying I intend to live as a woman forever. But then if I CAN do that, is my gender suddenly recognized as legit? Can I stick 'female' on forms, or do I have to explain to every single person who does a check on me why my ID doesn't match my form? And if it DOES recognize my gender what the heck is the point in a gender recognition certificate!?
I've had problems with the info provided on direct.gov before, so I tend to delve a bit deeper now to find what I'm looking for. I haven't looked recently, but I wonder if you might find more reliable info from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission? EHRC - Home EHRC are the national guardians of all things equality, so it might be a better source of info than direct gov. If you click on "contact us" there should be details of an advice line. Hope you find what you're looking for.
@Linco thanks for that link. I've decided to go for it. Doctors appointment is made and the worst he can do is say he won't write it...which admittedly is pretty bad but then I know and like this doctor so I think he probably will. Wish me luck!
