First let me just say, I am biologically female, but I identify as gender fluid. I feel more masculine 80% of the time so when I go to work I feel uncomfortable and dysphoric. I can't wear what I want to wear because I am concerned I will be discriminated against. I feel that they aren't open to the LGBTQ community. There are only 6 people that work in this office so they see me all the time. So I am sure that if I wear a binder they will notice something different. I tried buying gender neutral clothing but a lot of my stuff is still to feminine. It seems that everything is either to feminine or too masculine, and its hard to find gender neutral clothing. So what do you guys do when you have to work in an office building.
I don't really know much but here are a couple things off the top of my head: -A scarf will help disguise a bound chest. -Men's clothing in flamboyant colors, or women's clothing in conservative colors -Dark colors (to disguise binders etc) -Men's undergarments under more feminine/gender neutral clothing Maybe this helps?
I'm gay and sometimes I feel its best to just go with people's assumptions that I'm straight to avoid discrimination.
Thanks wandering girl I will give these a try and hopefully they work. Thanks Austin, I was afraid of that lol. Yeah usually I do go with people's assumptions but lately my dysphoria and general uncomfortableness is getting to me at work . I may just have to work through it.
I would take the clothing changes gradually instead of jumping right into it. If you go for the big guns right away, they'll most likely take notice.
Yeah I know that my work place isn't accepting so its really hard to deal with at times. I would like to feel comfortable there for once
my advise is do what you think will work for you, going slow is good advise i think. i've decided not to come out at work because of too many homophobic comments and "jokes"
Another reason to make changes gradually: Change Blindness. You can take advantage of that to basically ease folks into things that they would otherwise notice.
