I'm going to a gender therapist soon as I'm hoping to transition soon. I'm terrified mostly because of my transphobic and homophobic family ._.. I have a feeling I'll have to cut them off.

What are the questions they you ?

How do I know I'm dealing with a bad GT VS a good one ?

I've heard of gatekeeping what is it and how do I notice it ?

I don't know if who I saw was actually a gender therapist. It was a while ago now and I forget but she asked when I thought I realized I was supposed to be a girl, a lot of stuff about my past especially. She asked me a lot of questions about if I understand all the risks and stuff like that.

I am probably not of much help. All I know is I kind of explained my whole life story to her. Her title was Nurse Practitioner but she mostly dealt with trans type stuff I think. Crazy Canadian stuff!

Really, every gender therapist is going to act as a gatekeeper, since it is their job. The key is that they make sure you are ready for the physical and mental stresses that transition can bring. So, if a therapist seems over cautious, or keeps moving deadlines for no good reason, that is when I would start to get concerned.
