Okay, so. I tried to do some research on this, but the internet doesn't seem to know. If you have depression and anxiety, but also severe gender dysphoria, can getting treatment (specifically medication) for the depression and anxiety help you cope with the dysphoria? I know it wouldn't FIX the dysphoria (because gender misalignments don't work that way), but might it make it easier to deal with? :help:

Anybody have any experience with this?

Well perhaps but that seems like a doctor question

When I was severely depressed and suffering from major dysphoria, things were definitely worse. (Aussie psychs try not to give medication, so I never got some.)

Coming to terms with the fact that this is who I am and that it won't change, cleared up some of my depression, and also lifted some of the weight that dysphoria had on me at the time.

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to ask my therapist on Thursday, and I'll let y'all know what I find out.

My therapist recommended that I go ahead and get on meds for my depression and anxiety--she is of the opinion that it will help me manage my distress and dysphoria more easily, and become a mostly-functional human being. However, she's also afraid it might make it easier for me to avoid coming out and making progress in my transition. ^.^;; Mixed blessing, I guess... Though, if it lets me make progress on MY terms, instead of on my suicidal tendencies' terms, I'll be thrilled.

An update: For me, so far, the treatment for my anxiety and depression has not really lessened my dysphoria--but it has made it easier to deal with, and easier to think about. I can now think rationally about transitioning and coming out, without going into a panic or emotional overload (like I used to). It's also making it easier to sleep, get work done, and generally be a productive member of society. I obviously can't speak for everyone, but it has certainly helped me a lot.

I think, and this is the opinion of someone not a doctor, it will help be able to manage the depression and sniexty but it won't make the dysphoria lessen or not much anyway. From what I understand depression/anxiety is a result of dysphoria.
