So, I am thinking that if I do transition I would like to get a tattoo to represent it.

Any ideas? Other than a butterfly or phoenix etc.

you could do the trans flag, words of any kind, something that represents estrogen? (for transguys I've heard ".5cc" used as a reference to testosterone.) a high heel, lipstick mark, etc...

Some of those were random "girly" things but I hope it kickstarted your imagination.

What about a man looking into a mirror and seeing a woman in it?

Do you have anything that represents femininity for you personally? For example, I'm thinking of getting a velociraptor tattoo at some point because I would always pretend to be male dinosaurs as a kid.

I think come up with a list of your favorite things about being a woman, and get a tattoo of one of those things. Then your tattoo will let you carry that joy with you forever, it'll be very personal to you, and it'll be something you can have fond memories of. A lot of the things you like might be abstract concepts like "freedom" or "feeling right," but there are ways to represent even those, too.

The thing that I'm basing this advice on it that my one tattoo (I intend to get more) is a tattoo I share with my two sisters. Ideas for "sister tattoos" tended to be hearts and flowers and quotes and stick figures with pigtails, but our sister tattoo is a triquetra because we have Irish heritage and there are three of us, it's more elegant, and it summed up our relationship with each other better than any of that saccharine fluffy stuff. I think a stock "transition tattoo" idea would be less satisfying for you than something based on your own experience with your transition.

how about a coidragon, its a coi fish that transitions to a dragon, its popular in some tattoo circles to signify a person changing their lives etc. its from an old Japanese legion that if a coi fish is reincarnated enough and attains enlightenment they become a dragon in their next life. the dragon is/was at the apex of creatures in ancient Japanese culture.

Not quite. It's Chinese mythology, and the myth says that a Koi fish--who grow strong swimming against the current--that manages to leap over a waterfall becomes blessed by the gods and is transformed into a dragon. It's called "the Dragon's Gate" and symbolizes surpassing adversities and fulfilling one's destiny. It is very fitting.

Interesting...as a cisgender gay male...I am thinking of getting a tattoo to commemorate coming out.

its been 30 years since i heard that legion, and it was presented as Japanese at that time, but there is a lot of overlap in Chinese/Japanese mythology given the interaction and trade over the centuries.:icon_wink

Yes, a lot of their myths are very similar.

How about a parrotfish or clownfish? Those are pretty cool, and also change their gender. I know for me, I plan on getting a dragon koi fish tattoo one day to subtlety represent my transition.
