I see a regular old behavioral counselor. Is she the one I go to for letters/etc.?

I go to just a regular mental health clinic for my ADHD and OCD. I can't start T before I'm 18 because of conservative parents, etc. All that yadayada. However, I'm only a year-and-a-half away from turning 18 so I'll still be with my counselor when I do. I see a lot of people talking about how you have to see a "gender therapist." Does a regular counselor count as one? I have no idea what the first steps to medically transitioning are. Apparently you need a letter or something? Can my counselor do that?

I have the same exact question. It'd be nice if my regular therapist could write the letter, so I wouldn't have to go and find a new one.

A regular therapist is theoretically capable of making the recommendation/referral. Whether s/he will feel comfortable being the one to do that is a different question, one that you'd want to discuss with the therapist individually. If s/he does not feel comfortable making that recommendation, then s/he should have a network that includes people who work within that area of specialty.
