Why is it more acceptable to be gay than to be trans?

i live in the deep south where being gay is acceptable. Most families have at least 1 family member who is gay or bi. Being trans on the other hand is taboo, horrible, unchristian even. Why the difference. i am happy that my gay brothers and sisters are soo accepted here but why aren't people like me accepted too? Why must i stay soo far back in the closet when my gay friends can enjoy the warmth of the southern sun?

Well, I must say it only seems that way. Once the family realizes your trans they tend to think otherwise. However I've heard of the south being bad for both trans and gay individuals.

The south is accepting of gay folks now!?!

Realistically, it's probably just because being gay/bi is more common than being trans*. That's the only reason I can think of, but no it's not a good reason. It's simply that people fear the uncommon and unknown.

Well, for one gay people have been fighting a lot longer to be seen as equals. I think being trans is a little behind in terms of people accepting it.

Second, when you're gay, or bi, that means you find people of the same sex attractive. Being trans though means your gender doesn't line up with your body, and in many cases people will present as the gender they feel, and thus I think it creates the idea to cisgendered people that they are being tricked.

So a gay guy can walk up to a straight guy not knowing he is straight and ask him out and the straight guy just says no, because he isn't gay.

But a transwoman walks up to a guy and asks him out and he says yes, but later he finds out she started life male and he feels tricked.

I think this is why many trans people don't feel the need to say they are trans. They know it will cause drama.

I believe because it seems more "extraordinary" for a person to change their gender in a lot of peoples eyes, while being gay is just an attraction. I don't know how to put it, so that's my best way of saying it.

But, I also think because being gay is more common than someone being trans.

    Yikes.

As a person who desperately wishes to escape this area, I can fully understand your disdain. While it's not exactly North Carolina it's still one of the vehement states and the only one I've suffered from first hand.

I suppose I see it this way: They're more accepting to left-handedness than homosexuality because society has time to move on and accept it as more normal. They're (Ever so slightly) more accepting of gay individuals over trans citizens for the very same reason. Their minds don't progress on their own, and a good portion of society has to call them out before they either realize they're wrong or keep their ignorance to themselves. Many would rather reject others at all costs before admitting they may have been wrong, and the reason behind this remains a mystery to me.

As melancholic as it may be, I fear it will remain in this state for generations to come unless something major were to take place.

My mom at one point said "I wish you were just gay instead".

My sister said the same thing. I do live in England though; homosexuality and being transgender seems to be more accepted here than in most of the states.
