Is it just me, or do a lot of us not smile when we're wanting to appear more masculine? I've noticed it a lot. You look at a picture of a FtM guy, and usually they're almost scowling. I've done it myself. My own reasoning is that I'm too pretty when I smile, and even if I were on HRT, I have this fear that as soon as I smile, I'd never pass. Is this common, or am I only noticing it because I tend to do it? Lol

Before I came out I always looked like that but ever since I came out and everyone is using my preferred name and pronouns... I smile more now. Especially since I am now on T

    Interesting...

I tend to smile in photographs because I am asked to, but in real life I am not a smiley person in the least. Though I attribute this more to my personality than to masculinity.

I haven't heard that one. For me, I don't smile a ton because I'm self conscious. It's not that I think I look pretty, but that I have a bad one and it's just not great to look at.

I always think it too. When I smile it's too pretty and makes me look girly. I don't smile much, but I laugh a lot.

I have a habit of smiling a lot but yeah, when I'm trying to look manly I do put on a neutral expression. I look pretty stupid when I smile anyway.

I also thought so. Recently I'm trying to reduce smiling and laughting cuz I'm afraid that will make me even more feminine.
Or I try in front of a mirror to find a "cool" way to smile...still haven't xD

I'm not a smiler to begin with. I used to be told to smile A LOT. I don't feel like it makes me look girly, and I'm not concerned with passing. I simply had that expression and looked like her, lol:

Nowadays I smile way more, because I'm more myself and happier.

Smiling does not help me pass at all. A little is okay, but I cut it back.

I actually have a pretty cute smirk, if I may say so. :\ I sometimes kick myself in my nonexistent nuts for laughing like a girl, though, but hey--each to his own masculinity.

At least I'm not alone, haha. It's not that I think laughing/smiling itself is a feminine trait - of course not! I just think that a lot of FtMs who are wanting to pass tend to hold back smiles. I am a VERY smiley person, and I'm afraid it makes my face way too feminine when I do. My cheekbones rise higher and get fuller, my front teeth have that womanly shape (I once read on a dental website that men typically have incisors the same length as their two front teeth,
while women have a "wingtip" shape), and yeah... Just prettier in general. I don't want to be pretty. I want to be handsome. Maybe after a while on T when fat deposits in the face have shifted around, and facial hair is abundant, I'd feel OK to laugh and smile again.

This is so me. I'm not a smiler and the one thing that really makes me agressive is people telling me to smile.

But I think it's not about passing, it's that males whether trans or not tend to smile less.

I don't smile, but that has less to do with being FtM and more to do with that fact that my dental health is horrible. To smile would mean to show rotten teeth, and i rather not.

A lot of guys I hang out/have hung out with smiled a lot. I think it may vary, but it's not uncommon for a guy to smile a lot; it probably just depends on the personality of a person in general.

I don't think that it is uncommon for a guy to smile. Broody men or those with resting bitch face (cause yes men can have those too) don't tend to smile as much. But from my own experience men do tend to smile often enough.

and of course, men and women both tend to not smile when by themselves.
