Earlier today I turned in a paper about who I admire for my english class, I chose George Carlin as he is someone who I admire. About 15 seconds after I turned in my paper, my english teacher told me that I could not write a paper on George Carlin, she would not tell me why and she definitely didn't have enough time to read it as it was a page long. This paper is worth a large part of my grade and now I am not able to get a grade on it. I cannot write another paper as there is five minutes left in the school day and my computor at home does not work, i am posting this from my kindle. I am extremely angry and I don't think that this is fair. What should I do?
Not sure how your school is put together, but go to another teacher you like....do you have an advisor or home room professor? Is there a department head? You could always go to the dean or principal, with your copy in hand. Sounds silly, but don't mess with your copy on your computer so you will still have the time stamp. That came in handy a few times for me.
I was thinking about going to my principal because she wouldn't have a leg to stand on iff i pressed the issue. im going to try talking to her tommorow and seeing what she has to say
In most schools, it would be the assistant principal or principal. If your teacher didn't put any restrictions on it (for example, she could have said a historical person, a politician, a literary author, etc), then you fulfilled the requirements and you should definitely be graded based on what you wrote. It's likely she *intended* for people to write about more traditional people, but there's plenty of valid and sensible reason to admire George Carlin. Honestly, to get the point across, if you don't have success with the principal, I would make a call to the school board. What the teacher did amounts to attempting to censor thought and expression, and that isn't a healthy thing in a classroom.
Great! I'm glad you were able to resolve it... and just maybe she'll think a little differently about you (in a good way!) as a result of this.
I didn't read any of the responses, but you sir, are my hero.m Carlin is my favorite public figure of all time. He defeated the FCC and changed freedom of speech as we know it.
Definitely unfair. So much for freedom of speech. And she didn't even explain why it was bad to do it on him??? Go to the damn principal, that is bullshit! I'm sorry. Edit: Btw, yes, George Carlin was awesome! R.I.P
