My letter regarding Marriage Equality to my local newspaper

During the recent Australian Federal election and afterwards, I have been reading letters to the local newspaper arguing against 'Marriage Equality'. Each and ever argument has really about them projecting them own insecurities and superiority complexes such as the bloke wrote about rights for the LGBT Community is unnecessary as they are a minority.

I do not know if they will print my letter I emailed to them on, 27 September(2013) so I will just have to wait and see. This is what I wrote;

Dear Editor,

During the past few years, Australia had this insane debate over marriage equality. Those who oppose it have offered up the strangest arguments against marriage equality such as suggesting it leads to bestiality amongst other odd suggestions.

One opinion recently printed in the Penrith Press expressed the view that equality is not deserved for a people who are a minority group. An argument that I am sure has been used to deny human rights and civil liberties to many groups around the World throughout history to project any particular groups so called, superiority over others.

When I was a young teenager, I went through a dark stage as many do. I found myself at a crises point in life and there were thoughts running through my head to do things that would have led to disastrous consequences. In this community in which I was raised, this strictly God fearing heterosexual community had not an ounce of concern. Not just with me but with many others.

I owe much to the two ladies who sadly hid their relationship away from society for fear of being persecuted. Only they cared and bothered to help me and without them, all the rage built up within me would have been released. Such a caring compassionate couple such these two ladies should never be denied the right to be treated equal as people just because an ever reducing number of people feel the need to enforce their small world upon everybody else.

Marriage was not invented by any Monotheist religion. Marriage has existed in hundreds of forms and not so long ago, western society put a monetary value on the heads of their daughters in marriage to increase the wealth of men. And it is not long ago at all where a conservative push in Australia saw certain people of public notoriety call for harm to happen to a female Prime Minister.

It is my personal opinion that the definition of marriage should not be decided by the view of a Church but that by secular legislation that defines marriage as being formed by consenting adults, with the by-law allowing religions and marriage celebrants being allowed to decide whether they wish to provide the ritual of marriage.

Good for you for speaking up. That letter you mentioned "They are a minority so who cares," really rankles me. It's like saying "People named Scott are a minority, so they should have no rights."

I was thinking today how people in past generations had to be incredibly strong just to survive. A lot of us even today have it bad as teenagers, but for that to continue well into adulthood, i can't imagine. You've certainly earned the right to be heard on this, far more than some bigots who all these years later want to continue oppressing. Your letter has that personal touch, mixed with logical arguments, and is well written. Hope it gets published so it can change minds on this.
