thanks to everyone who gives advice in advance! Anyways, A couple of months ago I told my best friend I am gay. Now she has been very supportive of me and me coming out. However lately she has been using the word 'gay' as an insult (as in: that's soooo gay!!), if she said it once or twice I wouldn't mind, but in this one conversation she has used in 5 times! This is really annoying me! What should I do? Thanks!
I highly doubt she's doing it deliberately to spite you in any way. The word itself has become an almost comfortable insult for most people and it usually takes on a different meaning as opposed to bashing anyone who's actually gay. If you're that concerned about it, just tell her how you feel and ask her reasonably if it possible to stop using it so often.
Explain that it bothers you because using the word "gay" as an insult implies that being gay is something bad, when it isn't. If she's a real friend she won't want to hurt or offend you, and will stop using it. It's important to be open with your friends
There are people who are genuinely not homophobic but due to society integrating it into their lexicon it becomes an instinctive response. People must unlearn what they have learned. It takes time and effort.
agreed, that's the best choice and also as others say, using gay as an insult is very common everyone, i typically never use it cause i rarely get to fighting ppl, in fact many related to the word are used all the time here in spanish ofc lol
"Why is gay a bad thing?" You don't even need to put your opinion out there, but they'll have nothing at all to justify themselves.
My brothers had a problem with using "gay" as an insult and I started saying that and they realized how dumb it sounded to used "gay" as an insult. (And they don't even know that I am a lesbian so props to them for realizing what idiots they had been :eusa_clap... I just had to give them a little nudge.)
