I'm going to college and I got accepted:icon_bigg, but now I have to worry about college funds:dry:. I'm auditioning for a music scholarship and playing on the clarinet and Its long ways away, but I need tips/advice for auditioning. What should I expect? What should I practice? What do I need to be cautious about scales? I need help any will do.

Congrats on being accepted into college!

Have you ever auditioned in a college setting before? Also, do you know if this is a blind audition or not?

    No I haven't auditioned in a college setting. What's a blind audition?

A lot of college auditions are done by a blind method. What happens is that you are assigned a number and then you go and play your materiel for the judges, that are usually behind some sort of barrier so that you cannot see them and they cannot see you. This makes sure that they are judging based on your skill level.

For scales, I would know the chromatic scale for sure, as many colleges ask that scale to be played. You don't want to play your scales too fast, or too slow. You want them to be able to hear your tone quality and tuning. I would practice all different kinds of scales, because they really help you train your ear to tune and they help you focus on your tone quality. They help you to extend your range too.

Many colleges will send out an audition packet before the audition. You say that this is a long way off, so that means that they most likely have not sent it out yet. Many times, they will have you prepare a solo and a small etude piece. Sometimes they let you choose your own, other times they provide the music in the packet that has the details of the audition. Some schools will have sight reading as well. So, working on reading complicated music quickly would help too.

For now, I would focus on range, tone and tuning. Also, if you are not used to playing in front of people, then that would be something that you want to work on as well. Once you find out more about the audition, you can work on better preparing yourself
