Has anyone here ever tried online therapy? or Counseling? Via Webcam or just regular type chat.

Where did you go? How was it? And Would You Recommend It.

I am seriously considering going to see a counselor or therapist or somebody, but I am a bit embarrassed to do it in real life. Still pretty desperate so has anyone tried it online with a licensed professional, I understand it is a lot cheaper. But does that compromise quality.

The cheapest I can find is $20 a session, it is something I could afford, but would it just be a waste?

Are there any that specialize in homosexuality? I have looked online, and am pretty resourceful when it comes to finding things on the internet, but this is something legit hard for me to find.

I've done the free sites before and they were never really helpful. I think I need to talk to a professional.

I have no experience of online therapy … but if you have LGBT helpline or other resources (I guess you do in Toronto) they will probably keep a list of therapists that specialise in gay issues .. and may also know ones that do it online.

there will be a website for the local professional body that regulates therapists in your country. That website will probably have a short CV of each therapist and their contact details and a note of their specialisms

I would also say that you need not feel embarrassed to see someone in real life (it may be better in some ways to be in the same room!)

    good luck !!

I'm also considering this, in case I can't negotiate why I'm out of home

I have looked at ones in Toronto, they cost a lot more than I could afford. The whole point is to sort of avoid doing it in person, I am again a bit too embarassed, and feel I would be a hassle to the therapist because I am a bit emotional and can be frusturating. I just feel online, emotion might be segregated a bit so I can just sort of get to the point a lot quicker, without jumbling my thoughts up with bullshit.

They're literally like $100 a session for online in Toronto, which I can't really afford.

    Thanks for the advice though.

I know I can get subsidized crap, but that is all for in person. I am not aware of any paid for online counselling covered by OHIP(Ontario's Health Plan).

I am willing to pay like $20 a session, I just feel that price is so low it may not be worth it.

    Has anyone actually tried one?

Online therapy, done via IM, voice chat, or skype, is growing in popularity. There's an online therapy association that's trying to establish best practices, and online therapy is something regulated (in the us) on the state level. Your therapist must be licensed in his/her own state, and in some states, the therapist must also be licensed in the state of any client s/he is working with.

There are significant advantages to in-person therapy; there's a lot of nuance of body language, breathing, and other things that aren't easy to pick up on skype, and impossible by phone or IM, but online therapy is better than no therapy.
