I've been increasingly anxious, lately. About two weeks ago, I had a rather vivid dream where I was standing outside my house, looking at the sky. I saw a plane get shot down and crash about a mile away, then a fighter jet zoomed overhead and disappeared into the distance. This was followed by a bright flash and I woke up to the sound of a car backfiring. Needless to say, it shook me. Since then, I've had a growing sense of... unease, regarding nuclear war. I look at everything going on in the world, particularly the United States' degrading relationship with Russia and I'm becoming increasingly paranoid of a nuclear strike on my home soil. I keep reading about the effects of nuclear winter, and while the statistics for survival are good, they're not great. Lately, I can't keep my mind off of it. I watched a movie, an old Akira Kurosawa film called I Live in Fear, where Toshiro Mifune plays an elderly man who is trying to move his family to Brazil in order to evade the impact of a nuclear fallout when World War III breaks out. It's becoming detrimental to my day to day life. I'm afraid to go out on walks, and every time I see a plane a chill runs down my spine. I want to talk to a therapist about it but I can't think of anything they could tell me to feel better. I still don't really believe in psychotherapy. I consider cognitive behavioral therapy to be lying to myself by sugar coating my problems, or 'reframing' them. But this isn't a problem of my own, it's a global problem and for some reason I feel a very real sense of dread from it.
I think your just over- paranoid. Nuclear war is unlikely( well, much, much, less likely than before 1991.) , unless North korea, the only country left actually crazy enough to use nuclear weapons, loses it. It's just a dream. I had a really freaky dream last tear that looked so realistic, i could have sworn it happened and made me paranoud for a bit, but i got over it.
Sweety, it sounds to me like you may have PTSD. Don't take that as a diagnosis, as I am obviously not a doctor. I am someone who suffers from PTSD myself though. It is not just something that soldiers get. Any extremely violent and shocking event can trigger it, even an extremely intense dream. I would strongly advise you to see a professional, as it will only get worse without proper treatment. Assuming it actually is PTSD. If it gives you any comfort at all, I really don't think nuclear war is any kind of an immediate danger. Try to find a way to distract yourself so you won't think about it. I hope you feel better. <3
Actually, it's funny you should say that. I was diagnosed with C-PTSD about four years ago. I'm on a lot of meds combating it, but now and then it still slips through.
I have an intense anxiety for the rise of fascism in Europe. I'm white, so it's not anxiety for my own sake entirely. More like it's anxiety of that I don't want to live in a world like that.
It's highly unlikely that a nuclear war will ever begin, even if there is enough nuclear weapons in the world to destroy the Earth 7 times over. That fact is exactly what's preventing it, say if the USA fire a nuclear bomb at Russia, Russia will detect it and send nuclear bombs over to destroy the USA and England (as they are allies) by then England would've responded by sending nuclear bombs over to whoever. To put it simply, no one will strike first because they know that they will be destroyed if they do so. So don't worry, we'll be aight!
There actually aren't enough nuclear weapons to destroy the earth 7 times over. I guess it's a pretty common misconception, since I hear it a lot. Watch this video : http://https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3CerozsNjgw
Don't worry about that stuff we have missile defense systems specifically designed to prevent this from happening look here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missile_defense Also fallout isn't a thing anymore the biggest nuke ever made had 97% less fallout than the ones dropped on Japan. Revealed: The Most Powerful Nuclear Bomb Ever | The National Interest Blog Again we can shoot these things out of the air before it even get to the atmosphere so there isn't much to worry about.
I think they meant wipe out life 7 times over, but that isn't really relevant right now. Remember that this will probably never happen anyway, as if one sends one's weapons over to one's enemy, one will most likely be destroyed- that fact prevents a nuclear war. If your anxiety becomes worse, I advise distracting yourself while on walks and when leaving your house. Wearing earphones and listening to music could seriously help you in overcoming your anxiety, but I am no professional in this area so I'm sorry if this is of no use to you.
Thanks for your responses, I've been thinking about it (nuclear war) a lot lately. Every time I hear police or fire sirens or see a plane way up overhead I still get nervous. I do know that nukes go "stale" after some time, and that many of the nukes America and Russia have are leftover stockpiles from the Cold War, which means they probably don't even work anymore. Still, unlikely as it may be, the thought lingers in the back of my mind.
