My school has this safety internet thing for their WiFi. Now usually this would not be a problem as it is used to stop students from looking at porn at school. I've never even seen the page that comes off when they block something, but today I was on my phone trying to see if someone messaged me and/or posted on my wall and as I clicked on my profile it had the block page showing up. Telling me the website I was about to go on was blocked because of pornographic things. I then tried to go to forums, same thing showed up. Basically this website was blocked internally. Now I'm not sure if my school is just homophobic or transphobic or if it was just an error. But, I doubt it was an error. It would make sense though as I live in a relatively small town that is not as supportive as other places. But, I am slightly angry over this? I just wanted to share, I guess.:bang:

Maybe there was the word ''pornographic'' somewhere on this website prior to your post and thought it was really pornography. If you talked to them and told them there's no pornography on the website, then they might unblock it.

Has this been a problem before when using your school internet access? It's unlikely to be a computer error. Someone has added the site to the black list but it's not possible to say was this done at your school or if they use some generic black lists maintained by a third party.

No, it has not been a problem genially. But, I had never went to this website using my school WiFi before. I don't know how the blocking even works. I'm not sure if it was added by the school or was a list they got from a third party.

You too? About any website that isn't considered "educational" to the school even if it isn't inappropriate will be blocked by the Wi-Fi. The only way you can reach the website is if you disconnect from the school's Wi-Fi, but yeah talking to the school about it might help fix this in the long run.

My school's filter finds one reason or another to block almost every website. People just generally get around it using proxy servers through Chrome extensions

I can see this happening, and it makes me sad and mad. Your school should be there to support and help all people, and this is a great resource for kids and adults alike. Talk to them about the values of the website, and I'm sorry this happened. And yes, tea is good for the soul. I like random, mixed flavors once in a while, but usually go for acai or peppermint. They reflect my personality, I swear.:lol:frowning2:*hug*)

One time I was in a Starbucks that was attached to Indigo, so I was using Indigo's wifi, and emptyclosets.com was blocked for pornogrpahic/inappropriate material.

I sent a ticket, and basically the guy told me that the filter blocks any websites that have any degree of association to in appropriate material. He put this site on the whitelist, so everything is fine now. Perhaps you can bring this up and do the same? Or maybe it's different because you're in a school setting and drama/poor decision making can take place.

If you can find out what filtering service your school uses (almost all schools use a third-party URL filtering service as it's otherwise impossible to keep up with the hundreds of changes daily worldwide), we can contact them. Most have been understanding once we explain what EC is about, and that we are a nonprofit, and we've had pretty good luck with getting the site unblocked from a number of these services.

One time I went to a site blocked for adult content and gambling yet it had nothing to do with it.

    They honesty need better filters.

I was quite surprised that my school hasn't blocked this out, I would of expected it to.

It really depends on what the filterer is looking for, I know that there are some schools in my area that literally block out anything that plays videos, so it could be anything.

Most Low-budget (AKA school) website blockers usually just block sites containing blacklisted words (or at least where I'm from) so I am not surprised that this site is blocked on your network (haven't tried on mine) so its probably not intentionally blocked but getting a site unblocked is very easy to do. Their are (nefarious/malicious) ways to get past it but I wouldn't reccomend it ( trust me when I say would not reccomend it its from personal experience).

Your profile says your only out to a few people so if you don't want to confront your teachers/dean/principal send an anonymous letter requesting the site to be white listed (include site URL) and you should be good.

I can almost assure you its not intentional

I agree with Sackle- it's probably not intentional. If it is, though... ew @ ur school.

If you're comfortable with it, you could probably try talking to someone important there (you could always just say you're here to support a friend, maybe?) and see if anything can be done. I mean, it would be one thing for them to passive aggressively block the site, and another for them to look into the face of a student and say, "yeah, we blocked that site because we don't like gays". Even if it's true, it's difficult to get away with saying something like that these days (in some places, at least).

If you're not comfortable with it, then don't sweat it, I guess. It's annoying, but you'll just have to wait to come home in order to get on here.
