Hey guys! In the next few weeks or months, I'd really love to find a way to volunteer for the LGBTQ+ community, I just don't know how to go about it. I'm not super into doing anything in my exact town, but maybe surrounding towns. I'm not far from NYC, but I don't know if I can trek into the city all the time right now either. I wouldn't mind working at a hotline for people who call in asking for advice or just want to talk, if that exists. How do I find that stuff? It doesn't look like there's much around me in regard to that. Help!
Hi there! A local PFLAG chapter or LGBTQ* support group or advocacy group would be good starting points to inquire about volunteer opportunities. Is there a college or university in the surrounding area? This might also be a good place to start. Have you tried online searches for youth support phone lines or call-in centres with local place names? If there is a support line available it should come up, or at least you should be able to find leads to their contact information.
If I had the time to 'volunterr' for an organization, I'd probasbly pick a trans-gender support group or something that actively promotes trans-gender equality (second only to animal rights activism or maybe something a little more 'Green')-- but I don't think I could work on a 'phone line'. What othet stuff does LGBT support groups for their cause(s) do besides 'hotline operators'? Can I get a list? And where can I find such a 'list' by region?
