Depression.

    I have finally realised that I am depressed and I need help. However, I don't know where to go for this help or anything. I could go to my GP but I don't know what I'd say to them? Like how do I start to explain to them when they most probably don't specialise in the mental health side of things? I'm so down and I just want help but I don't know who could help me.

    Anyone who is in the same situation or has been your advice would be great right now... :help:

    You are correct in that they are not specialists, however they can refer you to specialists. GP's are great at putting you in touch with organisations who will be able to help with this. The NHS also has lots of information about accessing help:

    This should reassure you that you are not the only person unsure of what to do. It's brilliant that you are making an effort to seek help, and identifying that you need help is an incredibly mature and sometimes difficult step to take, so I respect you for that and you should too.

    Having been through 'the system' myself, one thing I would say is do not be put off if you are 'rejected' or you feel you are getting the wrong kind of help. You need to assert yourself and insist you need help - they will give it eventually - and don't be afraid to tell them what is and isn't working - they need you to be honest so they can help you.

    Your GP is a great person to start with for a referral to a provider who can help with your depression issues. Believe me, you will not be the first to ask him or her for such a referral! He or she is used to doing this.

    Another idea would be to go through your guidance counselor or advisor at school. Though you are 18 so I am not sure whether you are still in school or not.

    I'll echo what has already been mentioned by the other responder. The biggest step in getting help for your depression is recognizing you need the help; and then being willing to act on getting the assistance. And you already have these areas covered!

    Psychiatrists can prescribe medications for depression (and some GP's will do this too.) Counseling is also important, sometimes it can take a few tries to find a therapist you truly connect with, so don't be discouraged if you don't click with the first one.

    Things can get better! And I speak from experience. I have struggled with depression for much of my life...and wish I sought help earlier than I did. I have found both medication and counseling to be very effective- and they allows me to lead a 'normal' and much richer life than before treatment. Which doesn't mean I don't still have my struggles with feeling depressed at times, I do. But overall things are much better.

    You are on the right track with seeking treatment so early in your life..all the best to you!
