I don't think George Bush would've ever came close to doing that..
as far as I know President Obama is the first president to come out and support LGBT.
Makes me proud I voted for him. Twice.

This is exactly what I needed to hear when I was 12.

I cried through most of the second half.

I like that he's pro-LGBT'ers, but that's about it. For the sake of the thread, I'll leave it at that, because I do appreciate the support we've been getting from him.

Something like this can mean a lot to bullied kids, seeing the President of the United States address their own lives, while the kids might feel isolated and have no support in their own small towns.

I guarantee you we would not have gotten any message like this out of a President Romney, still mind-boggling how any LGBT person could have been so blind to the suffering of queer youth to vote for him.

I'm with RSwordsman here. I appreciate his support of LGBT issues, and it pretty much ends there. While I will agree with those who said George W. would never have made a speech like this, I don't think that he harbors any negative feelings towards anyone who is LGBT. It's simply politics. Let's not forget that his vice president, Dick Cheney, vocalized his support for same sex marriage long before Obama. I fear that this is often overlooked simply because of the "R" preceding his name...

Or it's overlooked because Cheney never did one damn thing for the LGBTQ community when it could have mattered nor uttered one word of protest while the Bush-Cheney ticket rode to re-election on a wave of vicious homophobia. Bush-Cheney would have lost the 2004 election were it not for turning out all the hatemongers to vote for them to stop "gay marriage".

But anyway, this is a discussion for another thread...

Yeah, you've got to look at things; Obama's dome more than any other (or all) presidents combined for the LGBT community than was previously done, and he hasn't let it all fall to shambles in the process.

I gotta say, mad props to our president.

I wish more was done, but that's congress; lets make them change their minds (By voting, running, voicing our opinions, etc). You aren't happy then they should be the first people to do something; not everything is perfect but really, they're apathy has been pretty ridiculous.
