New guy here, working on my life story and how I got here. I will post it soon and looking forward to your thoughts and insights, but thought I would toss out an ice breaker for now.

I know that being gay is just part of our whole self and that we have all sorts of personalities and interests as gay men, but how about a fun thread where we discuss things about ourselves that would (or did) shock people to learn we're gay, and things that would (or do) make people say "how did I NOT know!?" I'll start:

    Shockers:
    - I love sports, live and die with my teams and obsess over them, and I'm hypercompetitive when playing them. Ironically, I never experience sexual feelings or crushes on athletes even though many are hot.
    - I'm very charming with women.
    - I like fast cars and fast bikes and have a need for speed.
    - my guy friends are mostly masculine, manly men
    - I hate manscaping and I don't do it
    - I prefer cheap beer and beer/wine/food snobs annoy me
    - Showtunes make me stabby; my musical tastes include hard rock, metal, country and hip hop
    - my fingernails and toenails are atrociously maintained

    OMG it is so obvious!:
    - I just typed OMG
    - I'm very charming with men
    - I'm conscious and ashamed of my fingernails and toenails
    - I don't want LASIK because my glasses can make a statement
    - I'm a flashy dresser and I like nice clothes and underwear that show off my body, esp. my butt LOL
    - I just typed LOL
    - I'm OBSESSED with my hair and I just typed obsessed in all caps
    - My musical tastes also include Barry, Barbra, Lady Gaga, Katy, Adele, Erasure, Bowie, New Order

    SHOCKERS:
I usually have a goatee (for some reason people I know think gay men never have beards)
I geek out over Dungeons and Dragons and have DM'd for about 15 years (again, being gay and nerdy is a shocker to some people I know)
I'm not very fashionable and usually dress for comfort (I'm no slob but I don't dress cute and preppy either)
I listen to prog rock, folk rock and goth over stuff like Lady Gaga
I'm a big horror fan and love all things dark, macabre and surreal

    OBVIOUS:
I have a very soft, light and feminine voice
I take VERY good care of my hands and feet. Both are very soft and not especially masculine looking
I wear my emotions on my sleeve and am not afraid to cry if I am sad
I like to bake and decorate my home
I prefer shopping with 'gal pals' rather than watch sports and drink beer with the guys
When I'm excited about something, I start going into jazz hands mode

    • my brother said that I could not be gay when I told him
      Don't watch/follow sports
      Don't follow fads
      Don't follow fashion
Don't follow music (know my likes)
      Don't follow celebrity
      Don't follow politics lib/con
      Don't enjoy public limelight

    OMG...

The society that oppressed me totally disinterests me. Never saw that quite so clearly.

    • I am creative
Can always pick and like most expensive

These threads are always interesting because they say as much about our OWN stereotypes about gay and straight people as they do about those of society as a whole!

    SHOCKERS
Very handy with both plumbing and electrical.
Judy, Barbra, Madonna and Lady Gaga leave me cold.
So does poetry and flowery prose, for the most part.
I enjoy nice, gory action movies.
I prefer beer over wine or cocktails, and the darker and stronger the better.
Not at all squeamish about blood, vomit or poop, and have been known to carry on a casual conversation while scooping out a bedpan.
Very unemotional and controlled (unless I choose not to be--see below!).
Can't stand little yapping "kick me" dogs. Any dog under 25 lbs. had damn well better be a puppy.
Politically I am mostly conservative (except that pesky little "gay marriage" thing).
Very much a Catholic (on the liberal side though) and no intention to change.
    Married, with 2 teenage kids.

    OBVIOUS
I can flip into FABULOUS mode at the drop of a hat if I don't need to be controlled, and can be as flip and wisecracking as Eve Arden.
I know who Eve Arden is.
I talk with my hands. All over the place.
All of my closest friends are women.
My knowledge of the workings of cars is limited to filling fluids and actually driving. But I can identify just about anything produced between WWII and the Summer of Love by the styling. And I prefer cars that are finned, chrome-covered and pink.
I know even less about sports than I do about cars.
What I DO know is old movies.
    Musicals. Love 'em.
I would LOVE to get lasik so I could get a bunch of different stylish glasses with clear non-prescription lenses and change them at will to match whatever I'm wearing.
I dress better than my wife.

ChiorBoy, you're really starting to freak me out. It's like you've taken custody of my brain without my knowledge. Very weird how similar our take on this is... all I had to do was a few edits and a few comments to come up with my list.

Whoa, GDS8M, that is REALLY freaky! (Flipping into "fabulous" mode, hands and all.)

Eve Arden was the principal in "Grease". And yes, I do know who Cartman is. Good God, we need to have a beer/cocktail some time. Damn you, EC code of conduct!

hmmm, so if I put something on my wall that said "I get some 'me' time Friday! I'm going to ____ at ___ o'clock" and you happened to see it and we were able to pick each other out somehow... that wouldn't fly by the moderators would it? :eusa_naug :bang:

hmmm, looks like PM is ok though. I was confusing PM with chat room.

    My straight traits:

    I am married
I ride my road bike fast and further than I drive my car
I play racquetball with 20 year olds and regularly kick their butts
    I hate musicals
I have more guns than shoes
I take the garbage cans out
I live at the gym when not riding my bike
Jockey briefs, the kind you reluctantly buy at Wal-Mart, not designer underwear

Old Spice, not Yves St Laurent
When I buy Levis, I find the right size, then buy all they have in stock, so I won't have to shop again for years
I think of yappy fuzzy little dogs as kickballs
I have a stack of car, motorcycle, and biking magazines in the bathroom, by the toilet

    My gay traits:

Mac Pro Retina, iPad, Mac Air, Apple TV (need I say more?)
Wearing spandex bike shorts doesn't embarrass me
I voted for Obama even though I live in a Red state
I feed the damn cat that does nothing but won't die
"I kissed a boy and I liked it" feels like I song I could have wrote
If I had a classic car, it would be a '59 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, pink, with white top, like Jayne Mansfield used to drive
I stare at washboard abs, not "full figure girls"
    I do the dishes
Bette Midler, "There is no substitute" (!)

One of my sisters once told me that she wanted a real gay brother. I can't dance, dread shopping, and I don't share her gourmet tastes in food. She got mad when I couldn't identify a Dolce and Gabbana handbag. I still can't. "You're no good at being gay," she said.

My grandfather in France was baffled that I can't sing. He wasn't disappointed; just sort of confused.

The guy who cuts my hair (who is straight) was baffled as well. "You're not good at fitting stereotypes," he said. He's used to gay hairdressers, and had never befriended a gay guy who didn't "fit the mold."

A neighbor once figured it out. She said, "People don't think you're gay. They just think you're Jewish." It's like a trick: I'm actually BOTH!

I can say that I gave up pretending to care about sports other than skiing. Sometime around age 35-36, I finally just said "I'm never going to care about this." I tried for more than a third of my life, and it was nice to finally say, "no thanks." One of my coworkers told me that her (straight) husband feels the same way. It was interesting to hear of a straight guy with zero interest in playing or watching most sports.

More 'shockers' based on your responses so far:
    - Wow, so far it appears my passion for sports is the best part of my lifelong ruse! LOL.
    - At the gym I hit the power stuff hard and despise cardio. And I don't wear spandex when biking.
    - I never wear pink or pastels
    - most women say no way when it's suggested I'm kinda gay

    More 'duhs':
    - I'm definitely an Apple guy and own close to 10 of their products. Didn't know that was a gay thing but then again there's a lot I don't know about "gay."
    - I'm an awesome shopping buddy for my female acquaintances and they've always appreciated my brutal honesty when called for.
    - Far more female than male friends
    - I'm OBSESSED with clean, natural eating (there's that word again)
    - At the gym, yes I hit the power stuff, but I always hit the showers and check out the guys ...even if I don't really need a shower.
    - I know the name of most pastel shades
    - I cross my legs when I sit and my wrists are kinda limp when I gesture
    - several lady friends have suggested I'm gay
    - my current crush is this tall, thin, well-dressed guy in my building. Yum-O!
    - I just typed yum-O.

The 'duhs' are really starting to outnumber the 'shockers' here. Hmmm....

-Switched from Mac to Windows (didn't know that gave me straight points until reading this thread)
-Like camping, hiking, roughing it in the outdoors

    Gay Traits
-Zero interest in watching sports unless my kids are playing
-Love musicals... Hairspray is a favorite
-Closest friends since childhood are female
-Kind of a neat freak... Not that there's anything wrong with that (10 points if you can name that reference)

I've built furniture and a garden shed from scratch

    Gay traits:

    I date guys.

Looking around, it seems to me that most if not all "straight" traits co-mingle with "gay" traits in our culture, especially these days; what with the relatively (but already passé) advent of metrosexuals.

The only thing I am absolutely sure that is gay about me is that I engage in intimate sexual and emotional relationships with guys...
