Came out to my Ex tonight

Finally. More than a year after separating, after neatly evading answering his pointed questions, after more intentionally dropped clues than I can count... I came out to my soon-to-be ex tonight. Face to face - no emails or videos necessary.

We laughed, he made emphatic promises, I cried. He wasn't in the least surprised, he was supportive, encouraging, even. He stressed that all he wants for me is to find happiness.

WOW. What a tremendous load off my shoulders.

Eldest child next. I can only hope that it goes so well.

I know it helped that he had suspected for a very long time and had it almost certainly confirmed when he googled one of the biggest clues I'd dropped recently. He told me that after he'd gone online and discovered the details of my hint, he wanted to ask, but decided to wait. He realized that I needed to come out to him in my own way and in my own time.

Wow.

Then, when the conversation came round to me telling other family members and I expressed my fears, he went so far as to promise to set my mother straight should she respond in any way other than positively. Already has his whole speech planned out, because apparently he knows her as well as I.

After that, things degraded to typical straight male humor as regards two women together, but considering that the end result was humor of any sort, I couldn't even bring myself to mind! It just amazes me that out of the dozen or so people I've come out to so far, the man I was partnered with for a quarter of a century has provided the best response yet.

--- What I'd like to share with you all is that for the first time, perhpas in my entire life, I feel as if I've got carte blanche to move ahead with what I want. Live the way I want to live. Finally begin to be the person I've always wished I had the courage to be - the real me. And while I try to not let myself focus on lost time, I have also had a stark reminder recently that life is unpredictable and all too often is cut unexpectedly short. We all need to make the most out of each day and live the life that brings us joy now. None of us should put off happiness for another day. Tomorrow, next week, next year can not be taken for granted, they may or may not ever come.
