This should be an easy one, seeing as we're all at least a little not on the straight side... right?

Anyway, I was at the gym this morning, and, yes, there were some, um, fit guys there. The trouble for me was that every time I saw them, I tried to mentally "break" myself. I told myself that they were straight, and even if they weren't, I didn't want to cause any trouble for myself. Even if I had a glimmer of hope that they were queer, once I saw one guy walk off with a woman, I beat myself down again, saying something like, "Of course he's straight!"

But it doesn't have to be like that, right? I mean, straights are a big proportion of society, but they're not 100%. It isn't crazy for me to think that, yes, one of these guys at the gym is like me, right?

Hi.... No, it isn't crazy in the slightest. Straights aren't 100%, no, and we all think like that to differing degrees I think.
Please don't beat yourself down. The right person will come along for you.
Be yourself, and be proud of who you are. (*hug*)

My going in assumption at my gym is most of the guys there are not straight!

At the same time, everyone there knows I am gay, and I get chatted up quite frequently

There's nothing wrong with enjoying fit eye candy while at the gym. In fact it can be quite motivating

Trying to pick up and sample the fit eye candy seems like an advanced move to me, unless of course you know that the gym has a large percentage of gay members. Personally I prefer meeting gay men in settings where I can work from the assumption that a good percentage of the guys are gay.

Perhaps you can share your secret for being a gay magnet?

Back when I was single the gym was one of my favorite places to meet guys. I only had one instance of chatting up a straight guy and even that wasn't a problem--he was more flattered than offended.

I go to a boxing gym in NYC. Probably the most masculine thing you can think of. We fight. We bleed. It smells. Sometimes there's hot water. I've met at least two openly gay guys there (one being my 18 year old friend who I was hooking up with for a little bit) and there are two other gay guys who work on the staff. You're absolutely right, you're not the only one at the gym, any gym, who is attracted to men!

I had a pretty gnarly black eye last week. I kind of thought it made me look awesome, haha.

    Thanks

It's totally irrational thinking this, but for whatever reason, I'm having so much trouble accepting that I'm not the only gay guy in the world. Maybe it's just for lack of practice, I don't know. Maybe I was just conditioned to think it. Something to work on, I guess. But I do know that right now, I can honestly say I'm not comfortable being truly openly gay. :icon_sad:

I think you're right--it is conditioning. Living in the closet is an incredibly isolating experience. When I was young, guys NEVER talked about masturbating, and parents never discussed it with their kids. So I reached young adulthood thinking I was the only guy who ever...

Gives me a good laugh today.
