If you're unsure if someone is gay, should you ask them?

I'm genuinely curious if this one guy that I know is gay. Next week is the last time I'll see him since he's graduating college soon. He's not explicit about it but he does give off a slight vibe that he is gay (but that's just my assumption. I'm not 100% sure if he is).

Is it in my place to ask him? I'm in the closet and no one suspects that I'm gay, so it'll be hard for me to ask him since I'm not out at all. I don't want to NOT ask him and then later regret it. I just want to know so that if he is, I can ask him out or something. Is this wrong?

I just feel like time is running out...
