I "came out" to an associate at a business event - and I laughed

Spending a few days at a business conference, where I had to give a speech to about 300 people in front of me, I had assumed everyone in attendance had already known by know that I was gay. It's been over four years since I opened up to my workmates and business associates about my sexuality. And a figured the word ran rampant amongst my peers.

After my speech, I was having coffee with a business associate that I have know for almost 20 years, but only see intermediately at these type of functions. As we were catching up he asked me what's new and I told him how I recently married - assuming he already knew I was gay.

He offered his congratulations and ask when he can meet my new "wife". I literally broke out laughing. He had a puzzled look on his face. I then agreed that he can meet my "husband" whenever he wants! The look on his face was priceless, as I then spent the next 10 minutes telling him about my last five years.

I am still laughing inside as I am typing this

That's great, OTH! Your reaction was perfect! Eventually people will stop making such assumptions when they talk to friends and colleagues about their personal lives.

    I know how he felt!

I spent two years with a gay team member in my group for an Executive MBA program. He never told me he was gay, so when he introduced me to his husband at graduation, I had to think fast and act as normal as I could while hiding my delight! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I am certain my fellow MBA grad felt exactly as you do!

Speaking of surprises with fellow grads, a few weeks back I got a friend recommendation on my Facebook account (how does Facebook do this??) for an old friend of mine that I went to school with whom I had not seen since graduation. Following the recommendation, I send him a friend request and he immediately confirmed it. To my surprise, his profile picture reflected him and his husband whom had just recently married. To his surprise, my photos reflected my partner and myself (at the time prior to our wedding). I never once thought he was gay back in school!

We are all actually getting together for dinner in the next week with our respective husbands. I am really looking forward to catching up and hearing about his journey; as I am sure he is equally anxious to hear about mine.

That is a good story. Great job being out and glad he was accepting!

It will be fun indeed. However, aside from these two recent events, I really have not even thought about "coming out" in quite some time - it just seems so common and matter of fact now. It's more of a surprise when people do not know.

I love this story, it just confirms how much you are yourself now, that's it's so much a part of your life, you don't think twice about it.

Also that's awesome to hear about your friend from school! That should be a great evening sharing each other's journeys.
