    Hi,

With Bert & Ernie, R2D2 & C3PO, Tinkwinky and Sponge Bob being "outed" it is time for another...

    Davey & Goliath were gay.

In this episode Davey tells officer Bob he is gay.

    Fire Department - 1960's Davey & Goliath - YouTube

Gotta love those boys riding the fire pole into each other's laps and the double en-tadra (sp?) of Goliath blowing Davy's whistle.

I wonder if that church knew they were gay.

    Does that mean...

Gumby & Pokey were gay too!??

I feel my childhood of the 1960's being rewritten! LOL

Newton is the uber twink! And have you noticed how you can almost see Hercules' behind when his super short back "cover" starts flapping in the wind as he descends from Mount Olympus?

Oh, why does everyone assume Bert and Ernie were gay? Sheesh.

The true story of their relationship is much more interesting. Bert was a longtime alcoholic and was down and out, effectively living on the street...ever wonder about his obsession with paper clips, pigeons, and bottle caps? Ernie literally stumbled upon him in the gutter on his way to his new job at PBS studios. Always a sensitive soul, Ernie said, "hey buddy, you ok?" Bert, his mouth pasty with stale wine residue...and very possibly pigeon residue...told him to f*** off and leave him alone. But Ernie convinced Bert to let him take him home and sleep it off, while Ernie went to work.

It was only 3 months that they actually lived together, while Bert dried out and started to turn himself around. But to Bert it felt like years...and it certainly provided years worth of fodder for clips, once Ernie was able to convince the producers at PBS that their stories were marketable to children. Yes, they shared a bedroom...Ernie only had a 1BR unit...but they had separate beds. Anyway, thanks to Ernie, Bert was able to start his career as an actor (although he remained bitter that aside from his debut "Doin' the -- -- Pigeon", he was not permitted to pursue his true love of dancing).

Some day I'd love to write the full screen play for this...but I fear PBS would not give permission to have it developed. *sigh*

Still, at least at EC, let the story stand corrected.

Going a bit earlier than the 60s here, but I've been wondering about the Hardy Boys. Yes, they had girlfriends, but, thinking back, they really didn't seem to spend much time with them. Chasing after smugglers, counterfeiters, etc always was more important. I wonder what happened on those camping trips they took with other boys they knew....

Oh great...now I have this indelible image of Bert lying in some backstreet gutter, his head propped up against the sidewalk, stoned out of his mind and clutching a paper bag with a bottle inside...:icon_sad:

Speaking of "kids" shows from the sixties we would be remiss if we didn't mention Batman and Robin...I know, this has been covered countless times in other venues, but really...what IS the relationship between those two???

Does Robin obsessively hit his hand with his fist because he is trying to repress some experiences that are just too horrible to remember? Has he seen something weird involving bats and hanging upside down? The world needs to know!

Maybe Robin is just "on the nest", so to speak. I heard Batman liked it perverted, I mean inverted.

    Remember: truth hurts.

The important thing is that you're beginning to accept it. Only then can you come to terms with it. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Can you tell us Oscar the grouch's story?

Is Oscar part of Bert's story?

I hate to disappoint, but you're not going to like this. Oscar is not actually a grouch...he just plays one on TV (so he's a pretty good actor...except that you can sometimes see and hear the real Oscar in his tone of voice, if you watch and listen closely). In reality, he is quite an optimist with a very cheery personality...in fact, two years into the show (after an initial falling out, probably caused by Big Bird not being able to separate reality from fantasy), he became one of Big Bird's best friends (at least until Big Bird started experimenting with acid and had his hallucinations about the mastadon...oh, the 70's).

And of course Oscar doesn't really live in a trash can...again, that's just TV magic (come on, how could he really have multiple rooms down there??...not to mention sewer service?)

His intersection with Bert's story is fairly trivial. In Ernie's first few days at PBS, he and Oscar became fast friends. But when Bert came along, he was such a downer that Oscar really didn't like to be around him. So Ernie's loyalty to turning Bert around kinda drove a wedge between Oscar and Ernie, which Oscar eventually came to regret. But that's about all there is there, I'm afraid...a potential friendship soured.
