Default Study supporting gay conversion challenged

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/1...on-challenged/

Quote:
A study designed by professors from two religious universities says that some people can change their sexual orientation after undergoing years of a ministry program.

“Evidence from the study suggested that change of homosexual orientation appears possible for some and that psychological distress did not increase on average as a result of the involvement in the change process,” wrote the authors of a study published in The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy.

The authors are both psychologists who work at religious universities. Stanton Jones is a psychology professor and provost at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and Mark Yarhouse is a professor of mental health at Regent University, in Virginia Beach, which was founded by televangelist Pat Robertson.

Their study findings have been challenged by other researchers who say that the bulk of the existing evidence indicates that sexual orientation does not change. Gay advocacy blogs have also disputed the findings...

and it is documented that those who claim they changed to heterosexual tend to after years of suffering the lie, come out and say that it doesnt work... including those who created the conversation therapies themselves.

I was just thinking the same thing. I agree. It doesn't work.

Everybody has a bias. That’s why we have accumulation of data – and that doesn’t support their data.
I think that quote from Dr. Drescher says it all. Until an overwhelming preponderance of data shows that gays can be converted, this study's findings are bunk.

As a Psychologist undergraduate this intrigues me. However, I could quite easily critique it greatly as many have proven. For instance, the participants may have been easily intimidated and so felt the need to please the researchers by saying that were becoming Heterosexual where-as they were actually still gay.

Of course, they could also have gained participants who, more than likely, wanted to be "cured" of their homosexuality and therefore were probably more susceptible to the therapy than say a gay man against his will. Speaking of which, this study makes me worried in that some idiot somewhere with no foreknowledge or sense is going to think that this can be used as a universal "cure" and could quite easily be deployed against the gay community. Unfortunately, such therapy would fail from the start as you need the client to be open to the therapist.
