Default MI teacher removes 'gay' from Christmas carol

http://www.kplctv.com/story/16201311/mi-teacher

Quote:
A traditional Christmas carol is at the center of a controversy at a Michigan elementary school after a teacher changed the lyrics to keep children from giggling while singing "Deck the Halls."

"We have an anti-bullying and discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation and so going forward, the teacher will be addressing 'this is how we're supposed to be reacting,'" said Cherry Knoll Elementary School Principal Chris Parker.

The teacher decided to take the word "gay" out of a verse, replacing it with "bright" so the students sang "don we now our bright apparel," in response to a set of students who were fixating on the word.

"I had not heard of the substitution of the word 'bright' before in that song, it sort of caught me by surprise," Parker said...

"Parents told reporters that they found the word change inappropriate and that it has encouraged them to take the time to explain to their children that 'gay' is not a bad word."

Well at least something good's come from this.

It's not clear to me what that consisted of. Did they tell them it's not a bad word because being gay isn't funny, or that it's not a bad word because "it used to be a perfectly find word before the homosexuals hijacked it"?

Pretty much my thoughts on this. ^ As for the teacher, how stupid.

I actually kind of understand her reasoning.

I co-direct my school drama club, and we recently did a play that included singing Deck the Halls . Even the high schoolers had issues getting passed the word. I dont think she was saying the word was wrong, she was just trying to get passed the distraction it was causing. I dont understand why we always blow things like this out of proportion.
