Brandon McInerney, 17, will serve time in a juvenile detention center until he turns 18, at which point he will be transferred to the custody of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He will get no credit for time already served, and was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution.
In September, a judge declared a mistrial in the case of McInerney after a nine-week trial when jurors said they were hopelessly deadlocked on whether he should be found guilty of manslaughter or murder in the death of Lawrence King. He was set to be retried as an adult.
But last month, McInerney agreed to plead guilty to killing King "under the penal code sections for both murder and voluntary manslaughter," as well as to using a firearm in that crime. He will serve 11 years for manslaughter and 10 years for the use of a firearm.
McInerney was 14 years old when he brought a handgun belonging to relatives to E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, prosecutors said.
He shot the 15-year-old King twice at point-blank range in the back of the head, while both were typing papers in a computer lab for their English class along with two dozen students and their teacher, authorities said.

wait... why is it that the senetence for manslaughter was basically the same for the fire arms sentence?

wouldnt manslaughter be a harsher sentence?

Im sorry, but this was a murder, not manslaughter. Lousy deal, 11 years for killing someone in cold blood because he's gay? Sorry, total fail. And they gave him 10 years for use of the firearm. Thats like saying having the gun was almost worse than what he actually did with it. I think the prosecutor chickened out & that the Fed's should have charged him with a hate crime, but that's just me...

Sadly, the prosecutor probably accepted the deal because they weren't sure whether a retrial would garner a conviction.

Yeah :/ It sucks that he's getting off so lightly, but it's better to have him serve 11 years for manslaughter than to be found not guilty and not have to serve any time at all.

Point blank range in the back of the head is not manslaughter, its murder. That said, 21 years is about what you might get in the UK for murder anyway.

Someone who kills another person in cold blood is clearly not fit to be a part of society. This is more true when the reason for the crime was something as small as someone being gay. The problem I see is that if he eventually comes out of jail, he could end up murdering someone else. I mean, for this guy any little event could trigger a dangerous or deadly reaction.
