Default Washington State has the votes to legalize marriage.

Washington Legislature has the votes to legalize gay marriage as Sen. Haugen declares support - The Washington Post

Quote:
OLYMPIA, Wash. — As lawmakers held their first public hearing on legalizing same-sex marriage, a previously undecided Democratic senator on Monday announced her support for the measure, all but ensuring that Washington will become the seventh state to allow gay and lesbian couples to get married.

The announcement by Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, that she would cast the 25th and deciding vote in favor of the issue came as hundreds of people filled the Capitol to advocate for and against gay marriage.
Quite happy right now.

They have the votes, but they are not voting yet, are they? They just know that if they do decide to vote on it, it could pass? I'm confused.

I'm also perturbed by the opposition already saying that they plan on filing a referendum if it passes.

the opposition says that the moment the first whispers of marriage equality starts.

they began the floor debates on the bill yesterday, and I dont know when they expect it to get its first procedural vote, but they do have the votes to pass it. it may get more votes now that the minimum requirement has been met, and others can vote without feel the pressure of the opposition for being the one who put it into the green.
