My Dad is a pain in the butt about going to the doctor. He absolutely refuses to go until he just can't stand the pain anymore. Well he finally went. He has two discs in his back that are completely deteriorated and gone causing the excruciating backpain he has all the time. He found out he has emphysema due to his smoking. They were going to do stress tests on his heart today to determine if the emphysema has done any damage to his heart. The doctor called them (he and my mom) back in this morning and told them to get there before noon so my Dad was scared to death he was going to be told he has lung cancer. Good news.....turns out he's diabetic instead. He's got really bad pain in his stomach that they are still doing tests on. He's been vomiting for about a month now has no appetite and has lost 15 pounds. I think that might be from all the pain killers he's been taking for his backpain. I think its destroyed the lining in his stomach but we'll know more when the tests come back.

Anyway, my dad and I don't always see eye to eye on most things but I'm not ready to lose him yet. :frowning2: Please keep him in your thoughts and if you believe in praying, do that too. He's got alot of health problems to overcome all at once due to putting off his visits to the doctor for so long.

Becky, I am so sorry you are going through this. I will keep you and your Dad in my prayers. Please know your friends here will be thinking about you. While it sounds like he has some real health issues, diabetes can be managed. Just wait and see what the test results are and try not to think the worst. We are here for you, just as you have been for us so many times.

Yeah, I just hope he doesn't get overwhelmed emotionally with all this stuff. He's not a real upbeat positive person.

My dad went through a period with significant health issues and was pretty depressed. While he still has some of the health issues, his mood is much more upbeat, but it took a lot of support from the family. How about the grandkids? That helped my dad greatly.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your dad, I will keep him in my thoughts. Once he is finished at the doctor's get him to quit smoking! My dad smoked 60 a day and dropped down dead out of the blue at the age of 52; I was only 21 and never got to say goodbye or that I loved him or any of the things I would have liked to say.

(*hug*) Hope he comes back with some good news... Men what is it with them and doctors? (Yeah, yeah typical stereotype thinking on the part of a straight person but straight men are real babies about going to the doctors.)

The last health scare he had, he managed to stop smoking for five years. My mom left town for two weeks on a vacation with her sisters and he was so bored and lost without her that he started smoking again and hasn't stopped since. He's very co-dependant on her. I always thought if something happened to her first, he'd never make it. He really does need to stop smoking. When I was high school one of my best friends mother had emphysema and she died on a ventilator puffing her cigarettes. In fact, my grandfather died the same way.

I appreciate all your thoughts, prayers and support!

Cigarettes are a scary addiction, and I wish people could see that. My grandfather died from (among other things) emphyzema, and my dad was crushed, but he still has not even thought about quitting smoking.

About your father's diabetes--my mom was diagnosed with it almost 2 years ago now, and she too, was not an upbeat or optimistic person, but getting diagnosed made her turn her life around. She was overweight and had terrible eating habits. Today she is a healthy weight and has a good diet. She feels better about herself too. If your dad can come to terms that he needs to manage it, he will realize that it will become easy, even second-thought to take care of it.

You and your father and all of your family are in my prayers!

Hi Becky. I hope this turns out well.

Do you have any siblings? This is very stressful when you feel like you're the only person that is responsible for your parents' wellbeing. My mom was in that position and it took a lot out of her for a long long time. My grandma had alzeimers disease, and grandpa had high blood pressure and several bouts of skin cancer that required surgery.

Good luck. And remember to take care of yourself too!

Ciggarettes ARE a deadly addiction, only after almost fifteen years was I able to convince my own father to stop, and in that time they caused more than enough physical, emotional, financial, and health-related problems. If there were anything (physically) that I could do, I would.
