Shin splints? :-\

Recently, after I started running again, I've noticed these three bumps on my right leg.
At first, I just noticed the bumps because they were visible. They were not sore, nor did they hurt. It wasn't until I finished some of my longer runs that I began to notice them more.

The pain starts out as a burning sensation, the whole area becomes warmer and feels like it's going to burst. After a while the pain becomes a shooting pain starting from my lower knee down into my foot. It feels like when you hit your funny bone on your elbow, only on my knee. This happens with every step. When I get back from my runs my foot will go numb and I can feel it losing circulation.

I will ice it and elevate it after I get back, but it's really becoming a hindrance. This has never happened to me before, and I have been active all my life. I stretch thoroughly before every run and drink plenty of liquids before and after.

I'm not sure what they are, maybe shin splints? Here's a picture of my leg... :-\

The red circles highlight the bumps i'm talking about.

hmmm... i'm not expert but i don't think shin splints cause lumps .. its like small stress fractures of one of the leg bones.. it is caused though by increasing distances in running... but yer i agree go get it checked out.. and hope it's nothing too bad

oooo and from experience make sure you rest as long as your told to and don't do anything to aggrivate the situation - it really isn't worth it!!

The lumps aren't indicative of what I know about shin splints..but then, I don't know much.

If it is causing pain/discomfort, then I would have to suggest you lay off running for a few days (at least until Karabulut can come in to the conversation, hopefully with some ideas),

shin splints dont cause bumps, its just a pain as far as i know. the athletic trainer in my school just tells people who have shin splints to stretch for 15 minutes, then ice for 15 minutes then stretch again. it can take a week or two of rest for it to go away

The general consensus seems to be that it's not shin splints, but does anybody have any clue as to what it might be?

    Thanks in advance

if you are sure its because of your running, your best bet is to check with the school athletic trainer. if not go to a doctor

Perhaps the tendons in your leg snapped and curled into balls from the tension of running, perhaps you did not stretch enough and ran too fast. But I think you would feel your tendons snapping so its just speculation :/

    WIKIPEDIA:
In human anatomy, the ulnar nerve is a nerve which runs from the shoulder to the hand, at one part running near the ulna bone. When someone says "hitting their funny bone", it is the aggravation of this nerve that is being referred to. The ulnar nerve is the largest unprotected nerve in the human body (meaning, unprotected by muscle or bone), and the only unprotected nerve that does not serve a sensory function (those nerves specifically meant to perceive changes in the environment, such as nerves in the skin).
    END WIKI WIKI

That seems to suggest this is sensory nerve related. Either way it doesn't sound very good.

If the bumps are soft and they move from side to side when you press on them with your finger, they are probably varicosities, also called varicose veins.

Generally with shin splints, the pain happens early in the workout and gets better as the leg warms up or when the exercise is stopped. The pain is sharp, there is not numbness and the circulation is not affected.

There is a rare condition called EICS- exercise induced compartment syndrome- that has a lot of the symptoms that you are describing but it is a rare condition- I've never seen a case.

The numbness and blanching of the foot are serious symptoms and you should halt further exercise until your doctor or an exercise/rehab specialist. Make an appointment with your doctor for an evaluation as soon as you can.

Thank you. After reading a bit about EICS, I'm fairly certain that's the condition I have. Especially the part about the muscles becoming tighter after exercise.

Without exercise, the bumps are soft, but they do not move from side to side. After I get back from my runs, the bumps are quite noticeably firmer and seem to stick out further.

My mom was convinced that it was varicose veins like you mentioned, but I'm almost positive they are not. They don't resemble a vein nor can I see any obvious veiny structures (my veins are ridiculously easy to see also ) but, this information was enough to make her schedule me an appointment.

    Thank you very much

I know how you feel. I have shin splints now and they suck lol. I had to cut track season short 2 weeks early. My coach let me take the rest of the season off because of shin splints.
