So I was a late bloomer in puberty. I didn't really start to develop until I was almost 15. It doesn't really bother me until shaving/facial hair is brought up. All my guy friends can grow pretty substantial facial hair. I only have some sideburns and they take a month to grow to even be noticeable. I overheard some kids in my chem class talking about it and I am even more self conscious. Now that the guys in my grade are mostly developed, they can all grow full facial hair... How do I get over this fear/ self confidence issue?

If anyone who has had this same issue, how long did it take for you to be able to grow a full beard?

I assume you're talking about Movember. Not everyone participates in the no-shaving month-long event, whether that's for personal reasons or for work-related reasons, etc. Like you, I can't grow any substantial facial hair. Facial hair does not make or break a guy or man. That's really all I can say. It's possible that you're still growing, too. I knew this guy who was a few inches shorter than me in grade 12, and then I saw him a year after the end of graduating from high school, and he was taller than me by a few inches.

Of all the facial hair on my person, I could probably grow a mustache best, but I don't because I think mustaches (generally speaking) are terrible to look at.

I support the cause, but supporting the cause just by not shaving does little in the grand scheme of things without fundraising or actively raising awareness. Too many guys nowadays just use November as an excuse to not have to shave.

tl;dr I don't participate because I don't enjoy mustaches. If you don't want to participate (or can't) you don't have to.

Hi there! Some guys don't have a lot of facial hair to begin with, and as Luthan mentioned not everybody participates in movember. My work place will be participating in 'movember', but I myself probably won't.

Now, everybody is different. Some have more facial hair, others have less. Try to embrace that difference, which will help you to begin becoming more self-confident. Don't worry too much about what others are saying, or what their opinions are. It's all a matter of how you see it.

Thats so true, many wont even make the effort to make money but will still grow a moustache.

I knew two people at uni that could barely grow any facial hair but it never bothered them. Not being able to grow any or much facial hair is not even a problem, you have no need to feel self conscious about it.

I wish I didnt have to shave at all, its so annoying having to shave several times a week and its an extra expense due to buying shaving cream and razor blades. Im definitely jealous of you. Im not going to participate because I don't like growing moustaches but I will gladly sponsor anyone who is. Iv never seen many people doing it anyway.

Heh, I feel the opposite. I can grow whatever facial hair I'd like. and I waffle between loving it and hating it. Now that I've come out, I think that I'm permanently on the side of hating it. I see these guys that have baby smooth faces, and I'll never have that, even if I shave every day.

So in short, I think that "the grass is always greener on the other side"

Ugh, welcome to my world! Last year I shaved on my birthday [September 23] and then didn't shave until the end of November and my friends were outstripping me by like the second week of November. It was embarrassing. :/

I can grow decent sideburns, but other than that I look like a hobo when I don't shave >.>

I know a lot of guys who don't do Movember. I only did it last year because I only needed to shave about once a month. This year I have no clue if I could go a month without shaving.

I will be blunt, and you can take this advice or leave it...but it sounds like you have unreasonable expectations of getting a full beard of hair. If your genetics won't allow you to have one, then I don't think it's fair on yourself to expect that of yourself.

You use your friends as the benchmark for your expectation, and while the majority of them seem to be able to grow a beard, that shouldn't be the reason why you should have to/be able too. I'm guessing most of them are straight too? Does that mean you expect yourself to be the same?

If it helps, there are plenty of others who can't grow a proper beard. Like me

    Peace.

You can only be patient. However, once it does start to grow and you gotta shave everyday it does become annoying I find. So my advice would be to enjoy the times when u dont have to buy razors, or blades etc... If you want to do movember you can still raise money for charity even if you cannot grow hair yet. Do another thing for the whole month instead, i'm sure you can think of something. As for self confidence, have pride in who you are! your unique and everyone is different, stay positive about yourself and dont put yourself down! I'm 21 and still struggling to grow facial hair all over my face, its my genes and could be the same for you.

Unless you actually want a beard (the facial kind!) then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Facial hair says nothing about how manly or well developed you are. I got hair in other places before guys my age, yet my facial hair is pretty much only ever a light stubble at most because of my blonde hair.

Unfortunately there's not much in the way of 'advice' to give here. There's not much you can do to make your facial hair grow faster than it's going to. :/

There is no advice on your genetics and affinity for facial or any other form of body hair. However, there are other on the opposite end of the spectrum; such as myself for example, I sometimes feel too hairy and I get tired of shaving everyday. It's all in perception, some people do not like beards and some do. It kind of goes back to always wanting what you don't have: those too much body hair want less and those with none want more.

I couldn't grow a mustache to save my life. I do have my dad's facial hair genetics (Complete beard from sideburns to chin and down my neck), but I can't grow the mustache to get down the sides of my mouth and connect with my goatee. I'm only going to have that until I graduate college because airline pilots can't have beards for some reason. And I'm not a big fan of the 80's porn stache, so I'll be clean cut. But I guarantee you, the day I retire, that beard's making a comeback.

I never participated in no shave November, because I couldn't grow a real beard no matter how long I waited. (I get this ugly peach fuzz kinda hair in a few patches that looks really ugly, so I always keep myself completely clean-shaven).

At 23, I still couldn't grow a real beard, I don't think it's anything to be embarrassed by, people have different genetics, not everyone can grow a beard, but everyone can be clean-shaven and most people are clean-shaven anyway, it looks better in my view and in a lot of people's opinions. Personally I'm thankful I didn't get dark hairy Italian genetics from my father's side, it would totally have ruined my smooth twinkishness. Why don't you try embracing a twink identity? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I'm 24 and have pretty much accepted the fact that I can't grow any meaningful facial hair. Some guys can, some guys can't. Just like some guys are tall and some are short, there isn't much you can do about it.

Incidentally, I visited the "Movember" website and the rules are to grow a mustache only and it explicitly states a full beard or goatee or anything additional does not count. Personally, if I am going to grow facial hair, I'd want the full beard affect/5 o'clock shadow look or at least a goatee. I am not a fan of the plain ole mustache at all and you really don't see them often these days (not really in style at the moment).

Oh yeah mustaches look terrible, I think of Dillon from the "1 Girl, 5 Gays" show, he had looked and would look so cute if he were to shave off that ugly mustache he grew.
