Which is it? I can never remember whether it is "Starve a cold and feed a fever", or the other way around...:eusa_sile
Please don't take advice from sayings spouted by old women in knitting circles. Do neither - in either situation. Eat as much as you feel comfortable eating, and make sure you are keeping hydrated. You don't need to change your diet at all if you're feeling well enough to eat normally.
LOL, how did you know I was into knitting?? With old women? I know it's Old Wive's Tales, but I can never remember how the saying goes exactly... Thanks biwinning, hm hm, chicken soup would go a long way right now... Thanks guys!
Soda for a sore throat. If I often "starve a cold," it's because I'm too tired to cook when I'm sick lol. Feel better soon!
Actually, that's never been scientifically supported. For example: Effects of ascorbic acid on the common cold. An eva... [Am J Med. 1975] - PubMed - NCBI Ascorbic acid for the common cold. A prophylactic and t... [JAMA. 1975] - PubMed - NCBI The whole Vit C/cold connection comes from Linus Pauling, who recommended it to cure a bunch of ailments including cancer. He kept on advocating it even after numerous studies failed to find a positive effect on participants...
^indeed, too much Vit. C can actually interference with cellular metabolism. Gotta give pour Linus a break though, he was a true believer in these unproven vitamins but he made such fantastic contributions to chemistry (2 Nobel prizes) that I can forgive him these faux-pas.
Sure, but accepting that one was mistaken is one of the most important things to be able to deal with in the field of the sciences... He could very well have said, "Ok, I was wrong, I take all of that back." But he didn't, and now, decades later, people are stuffing themselves full of Vit C to the point where they could potentially damage their kidneys for all I know, and they are convinced that they are curing themselves... Anyway, I digress lol. Pseudoscientific remedies really get me pissed off haha.
I agree; people suddenly think very highly of themselves when they win the Nobel, like they're infallible or something...
I just eat oranges. It works oh and Some warm tea with lemon. I have no clue if that what starving a cold is....
Try this the next time cause by this time your cold's over: 1/2 Lemon Honey to taste 2-3 fingers of good Dark Rum Boiling Water, fill remainder of mug inhale the steam and sip while under lots of blankets in bed...you'll sleep like a baby and sweat out the bug.
I think it's feed a cold, starve a fever. Like stated above, I wouldn't put much value in this idea. I can say I personally don't have any interest in feeding a cold. If I fed it, I might encourage it to stick around. ---------- Post added 13th Jan 2014 at 06:20 AM ---------- It seems to me I've read there might be merit to chicken soup. However, one one fear I'd have in my own situation is actually getting sicker due to bacteria on the chicken. That is an issue that Consumer Reports has apparently been discussing. While the problem should be fixed by proper handling, I wonder if when one is sick if one isn't more likely to have improper meat handling mistakes/accidents. Of course, if one has that Special Someone to whip up a pot of soup... But [sigh] I live alone.
