So I am struggling to keep going happy at the moment I have thoughts of cutting etc. have returned, I spoke to my boyfriend about it and he made me promise that I would go to the doctors next week. I am pretty sure that they are going to refer me to a therapist (I plan to avoid meds if at all possible.) Just wondering if there are therapists (in Ireland) that specialise with LGBT people?

Theoretically, yes. A psychologist, therapist, or counselor may have previous experience in LGBTQ topics, or were able to pick up a major/minor in LGBTQ studies in college, and choose to practice specifically in LGBTQ communities and organizations.

The best way to find LGBTQ friendly psychologists, therapists, or counselors would be to get in contact with the various LGBTQ organizations in your area and see if they have anyone you can work with on staff or be referred too.

There are in the US and UK, I'd look into your medical part of the phone book or at a brochure at the doctors or even talk to a doctor at the office who could recommend you. I can't believe there wouldn't be.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that you're going through a tough time, but it will get better.
I don't think there therapists who specifically deal with LGBT, but I spoke to a counselor last year who had much experience in dealing with sexuality and especially with teens. She was located in the Dublin area too, but I can't remember her name.

It depends to a large extent on where you live.

In the US, definitely. We have a *lot* of therapists/psychologists/counselors that advertise as being "LGBT-friendly" and such. In my town we have two therapists who specialize in LGBT issues, like coming out problems, family counseling, relationship issues, dealing with discrimination, etc etc.

(*hug*) I'm really sorry that you're going through such a rough time, but it's great that you're getting help. To answer your question, it really depends on where you live. There are tonnes of gay therapists in North America (I have one that I see), and I'll bet there's some in Ireland too. What city do you live nearest to?

I go regularly to a therapist/pshychologist that specialises in LGBT matters. He is also gay himself.
