One possible sign of herpes is cold sores. They can be caused by a variation of the herpesvirus (either HSV-1 or HSV-2, both of which can also cause genital herpes). If you notice someone has cold sores near their mouth (orolabial herpes), it might be a good idea to avoid any kind of oral sex with that person, especially while there are visible open sores. That's one sign. The other would be if they have similar sores around their genital areas. Herpesvirus causes open sores, and the virus is transmitted through contact with the open sores. If someone has sores around their genital area, it's likely that they have herpesvirus in them, and the open sores are risks for transmission. However, the virus is generally only transmitted through direct or indirect contact with the sores. If someone has the virus in them but it's dormant for the time being, I don't believe it will be transmitted. Always try to find a "safe" way to have sex, though, to avoid possible contraction. Once the virus is inside you, it never leaves and it can flare up at any time.

Viral shedding is still possible even if there aren't any visible sores. Even people who have been completely asympotmatic (no sores) can shed the virus. Medication can lessen the chance of spreading herpes.

Gloves and dental dams to be safe.
