I've always wondered if you can get an STD from sucking someone off, and from rimming. I know you can now, so how do you protect yourself? Is it different for MSM than to FSM?

Yes to both, though infection of HIV from either would be quite rare. Gonorrhea or syphillis on the other hand can be easily transmitted orally or through rimming. Fortunately, they are also relatively easily treated with antibiotics.

The only real protection is to use condoms and dental dams, which most people don't do for oral or rimming.

Nothing... Condoms taste bad... even so called flavored condoms or adding edible lube. But yeah condoms and dental dams seem to be the only safe practice. You and your partner get tested. If you both don't have anything (and if u trust your partner not to cheat) you should be fine. Just get tested regualary especially if you don't use protection.
