Three things needed: lube (water based), condoms, and patience.

General guidelines:
1) ALWAYS USE A CONDOM
2) You can never use too much lube
3) The person doing the penetrating (the top) has to be patient to make sure the person receiving (the bottom) is comfortable.

If you're wanting to top: make sure to communicate with the bottom to make sure they're comfortable; go slow at first; when you get it in, hold still in there until the bottom is ready; make sure you're wearing a condom; a little foreplay with the bottom definitely helps and is appreciated (one finger, then two, etc).

If you're wanting to bottom: Make sure you have a semi-regular bowel (eat lots of fiber to accomplish); make sure you've gone poop at least a few hours beforehand; RELAX, make sure you've used a ton of lube.

It may hurt a little at first when entering, but just stop or pump very slowly and softly until they get used to the sensation.

If they are in a lot of pain then slowly withdraw, but by communicating and asking how they are feeling then they will tell you.
