Shaving can lead to nicks and cuts which sound very unpleasant. Waxing hurts like hell (had it done a few times) but then you don't have to do it as often or worry about cutting yourself. I'd recommend taking a few Advil a half an hour before if you choose to get waxed. Or another option is using Nair or Veet.

I shave roughly once every two weeks or so and it seems to work well enough for me  .

3rd option, trimmer. Much easier and you don't have to put up with the 2-3 days of itching! Just don't use it on your shaft, did it once, it hurt like hell and bled for 20 minutes!

I have problems with unwanted hair galore due to a medical condition. Here are options that I know about:
    1. Shaving, Pros: cheap, you can do it yourself Cons: only lasts 1-3 days, itches when it grows back, you can cut yourself
    2. Waxing: Pros: hair may be gone for several weeks, sometimes hair grows back finer Cons: Painful! can be expensive if you have it done professionally, can be messy
    3. Nair, VEET (Removal cremes): Pros: Cheap, you can do it yourself Cons: can cause painful chemical burns and not safe to use on genitals
    4. Laser treatments: Pros: long lasting or permanent. Cons: very very expensive. works better on light skin with dark hair, you can't do it at home and need to make appointments

I would rather wax, but it's messy, so I'll probably start getting it done at a salon. Then I'll keep going every 3 weeks. But for now, I shave. I'm wanting to save up for laser hair removal.

(I don't know why, but when I first read the title, I thought it said "Shave or Wave".)

I just have this Gillette trimmer that you can attach a razor blade on the top. I think it was about £20?

    Wax...
I have very, very thick hair, and shaving makes it terrible...and though some people say it doesn't make it worse, it does.
I used to shave only the bottom half of my legs most of the time, and at some point it got so bad and almost became like the stubble on guys faces, while the top half of my legs look better.
Waxing made the hair growth a lot less, I've been doing it for two years every 3-4 weeks, an it works great

OK, here's an opinion, though not a popular one - don't do either! Seriously, your pubic hair is there for a reason - there is nothing unhygienic about it if you are washing yourself there properly, which you should be doing anyway. If you want to make the hair softer - then use conditioner on it.

When you wax or shave, you are are opening your genitals up to a whole host of bacterial and viral infections because yes, even with waxing, you are removing layers of the epidermal layer that protect you - wounds only need to be microscopic for infection to occur.

It's only because of the recent trend in porn to have pre-pubescent looking women that this anti pubic hair fad is around. And by recent I mean the past 15 years - just look at classic porn of the 80's and 90's - hairy genitals were the norm then.

Nobody should have to subject themselves to the pain, discomfort and increased risk in diseases just because their partner isn't grown up enough to accept that pubic hair is natural. If you truly want to do that to yourself because you personally prefer the look on yourself, and understand the risks, that's your business.

Just don't remove your hair because you think society expects you to do so (because it really isn't), that there's something wrong with you if you don't (there's NOTHING wrong with you having pubic hair), or from pressure from your lover (anybody who pushes you to do something with your body that you are not comfortable with is a douche, plain and simple). Rant ended.

Shave...I shave at least every other day...more so in the summer due to going to the pool etc! Waxing seems like it would be painful and I was told you have to let your hair grow a little to do it and I'm not comfortable with that

To be honest, I have no idea what area of the body we're focusing on so I'm just going to answer for all of 'em.

For facial area, I shave and even though it's a total pain in the ass, it's cheap and easy. The only cons for me is that I have to be careful or I'll cut myself plus I have to shave like every day (if I'm going out that is, I don't shave when I stay at home) because that's how fast it grows - I kid you not. Usually there is stubble that gets left behind so I tweeze the rest.

For legs, most of the time I don't even shave them. It's only if I'm in the mood to wear shorts or have to wear a skirt that I'll shave them. Right now it's winter so my legs don't even know what a shaver feels like haha X)

For the groin area, no way man. I shaved around that area to clean it up once and it sucked. Sure, it was tidy but it itched like hell and left the skin really agitated so never again!

In regards to waxing, I used to have my face waxed but 1) hurt like no ones business, 2) it adds up and that's $$ I don't have, 3) It makes me break out, and 4) The fact that I have to go to a salon and get it done makes me feel self-conscious. :x That's when I turned to shaving.

I like shaving down there because I literally feel more comfortable. If I let the hair grow too long my hair sometimes gets pulled by accident and it hurts quite a bit. I also lose sensitivity.

I am not sure where the focus of this thread turned to pubic hair; however, there are many misconceptions here about body hair.

Body hair does not work against the existence of bacteria in any given area. It does not contain anti-bacterial qualities. What professionals are speaking of when they reference the ability of body hair to lower the risk for infection is that body hair is capable of obstructing the path of sweat. It couldn't be further from a crucial or highly effective method. Shaving off body hair has about the same affect as shaving off eyebrows. You might get a bit more sweat in your eye when exercising, but anyone who has ever exercised knows that sweat will run down the face with or without eyebrows.

Pubic hair specifically has the ability to retain high numbers of bacteria. Fecal matter, discharge, and blood has a tendency to latch onto local hair follicles and remain there until proper cleaning is carried out (i.e. not simply wiping). Concentrated patches of hair have a tendency of retaining more heat and the accumulation of sweat without that area serves as a breeding ground for bacteria.

I am certainly not attempting protests to against body hair. I am not personally hairless myself. I am calling attention to the fact that there are positives and negatives to its presence and its absence. The important thing is that we are always taking our hygiene into consideration and taking the necessary precautions whether they may be cleaning more thoroughly because we have a healthy mini forest growing or making sure that the methods that we do use to remove hair are safe.

If waxing and shaving are the only two choices I have, I'd pick waxing (unless it's my face, shaving my face would be the exception.)

When I shave I get ingrown hairs way more frequently, I get razor burn and not even a day later it itches like crazy. Plus it grows back fast!

When I'm waxed there is no itching when it grows back, it stays away longer and it's generally much more effective at removing the hairs in my opinion. The trade off is the cost (especially if you pay people to do it) and that it hurts. I think it's worth it though!

I'm actually getting some waxing done tomorrow

I didn't shave at all for a long time. Didn't see the point mainly because I thought it was a gay thing. Anyway other straight guys were so I decided to take the plunge.

I used body groomer for first few times and felt liberated. Still I could go smoother so I also used a face razor and smooth balls are excellent in your hand. Even if they are not yours!

Still not satisfied I trimmed my hole and pits too and never looked back. I can't stand the feel of pubes and they look gross on others. So I shave weekly if I can.

Never had the courage to wax. Don't know how to do it myself otherwise I would, any tips anyone? Are girl pubes different somehow? Would the same products work on a guy? Don't fancy being bollock naked in front of a stranger that's all.

pardon me and please im really sorry but i had to laugh you remind me of myself and many of us when we think its a gay thing like gay is everything feminine and fabulous
though i still have the idea that gay is feminine and fabulous cause im myself but i dont stick to others though don't worry it just applies to me

nope unless its made for thick hair and make sure its hot wax as the cold one doesnt really work with some men and even someone who have dark and thick hair
are you the soft type is your hair any thick ?? or does it look and feels like a kitten fur like my sisters
my body hair and my beard both are very dark and thick so i cant use some women products as they are designed for easier hair removal the hot wax and the wax that is made for thick and dark hair should work for you you know i once saved for a women hair removal cream for the face didn't work out for me don't do the same mistake as if your not soft don't buy the stuff that are made for them only make up whitening creams and some clothes work on us but others nah unless its made for some african latin middle eastern women those do have thick hair and the product does work for us
and yes there are some women shirts that goes with my style people never notice its not like women didn't buy most if not all of the time from men stores because they are cheaper it does work vice versa

So I tried waxing (previous post, done mid wax) with veet strips. It was sooooooo painful and oh my god no amount of hairlessness is gonna make that worth it.
That being said, I think my experience might have been different had I gone for a professional wax. I did a DIY job, with no experience and don't want to put anyone off.
After doing my chest and working to about 2/3rds of a strip below my belly button, I shaved the rest of the way. It itches like hell.
I think I'm gonna let it grow out again. This is just too awkward, especially since I cycle everywhere. I might try professional waxing, but some other time.
With regards to people questioning wether or not people should get waxed:
It is my decision, even if it's ill informed. I should get to make bad life decisions if they only impact on me.
I wanted to try this out of curiosity. Curiosity is satisfied (although the itching is not).
Might try an electric razor though.

Well this was posted under anonymous Physical and Sexual Health when I answered, so that's why I assumed it would be about pubic hair, not just any old body hair - it's not that my mind is always in the gutter, honest! :icon_redf

Nowhere did I say that hair has anti-bacterial properties. I also said that washing hair keeps it hygienic - so removal is not necessary. Body hair (especially around the genitals) keeps moisture and bacteria away from the skin - your skin can get infected, but your hair doesn't, so it is better to keep your hair there.

Also, keeping infections at bay is more about the integrity of the skin barrier than anything to do with sweat. When you wax or shave, you cause abrasions and irritation to the skin, which breaks down its ability to protect the body from bacteria and viruses.

Pre-op shaving of any body hair is becoming a thing of the past for that reason - because medical studies have shown it increases infection risk. Little bit about that here: Pre-op Prep Should Safeguard Skin Integrity

I know for a fact that at least in the last 20 years the hospital in Victoria, BC, Canada, advises against and refuses to shave the pubes of pregnant women in prep for labor specifically because of this heightened risk of infection for both the mother and the baby.

Your preference might be to have unprotected sex, and no doctor is going to stop you from doing that - however, if you asked their opinion it, they'd tell you it's a very bad idea. Likewise, you would be hard pressed to find a gynecologist who would condone pubic hair removal if you asked them about it. Pubic hair: 8 things you need to know before you shave - Telegraph

So again, yes, it is a personal preference - I prefer my partners and I to keep infection risks to a minimum over keeping up with what I think is a ridiculous, painful and hard-to-maintain fad. Let's just trim to be in for the win! (!)
